Book Description

A $100,000 student loan is murder-but then so is a human head in a Tupperware bowl.
First in a new mystery series, this paranormal mystery novel introduces Mariah Garrett, a woman with two weighty problems-crushing agoraphobia, and a six-figure student loan. While searching for something to sell on eBay one morning, she uncovers a hidden staircase in the upstairs closet of the beach-side Victorian once belonging to her Great Aunt Mae. A misstep on a stair sends her plummeting to the bottom and back to 1957, where she meets a young Aunt Mae who invites her to join the H.O.E.S. (Houston’s Outstanding Emissaries of Society) But when the annual H.O.E.S ball takes a deadly turn, Mariah soon discovers that even the Nifty Fifties can be a dangerous place.

Mariah Garrett is a woman struggling with two problems. Agoraphobia and a six figure student loan debt. While searching for things to sell on eBay, she uncovers a hidden staircase in the Victorian that once belonged to her Great Aunt Mae. With lots of old linens, towels and other vintage things she finds an old door in the back of a closet. After finally getting the door open, there is a staircase that looks like it goes to the apartment below. She briefly thinks that she should burst in and scare Dooley, the tenant. But she trips and she tumbles down the stairs and crashes into the kitchen of her father's grandparents, Bill and Florence Garrett. Now Mariah is really confused, she was born in 1981 and the calendar on the kitchen wall says the date is October 3rd, 1957. Mariah discovers that even the nifty fifty's can be a dangerous place. A $100,000 student loan is murder but so is a human head in a Tupperware bowl. A very enjoyable novel about what if you could go back in time and what changes could you make that would not upset your future? This was previously released May 26, 2010, titled "Death By Student Loan" This book was well written and no typos like you usually find. Job well done, I recommend this novel wholeheartedly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Premise And Fun New Series September 11, 2014

Interesting premise and fun new series. A young woman battling a fear of leaving her home finds a hidden staircase in her home that leads to 1957. Her family had owned the home in that time so she has the opportunity to meet the grandparents she never met. In the process she solves a crime that is related to the crime that sent her into hiding.

Smartly written and well paced this is a cozy with a little different sleuth. Looking forward to the next in this interesting series.

L. C. Russell's "Death of a HOE" is a delightful book with a fun cast of characters for Mariah Garrett to deal with along with her agoraphobia.

It's a fun read with humor and blending 1957 and the present day with a mystery to solve.

I recommend "Death of a HOE" and look forward to future books.
