Let me tell you...,
By J.Gail, Urban Fiction Author "J.Gail" (Philadelphia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Death of a Hustler (Paperback)
This is probably the first book I read in 1 day. Especially because I don't always have the time to read. Rorie writes so realistically, and that is exactly how I LIKE it. Great dialogue, perfect plot and everything ties together. It is the type of story you don't want to put down because you have to find out what happens next, and you think about the characters even when you are not reading. Now that is a GOOD BOOK.
Rorie is the first prospective author I met who told me she wanted to write a book and ACTUALLY DID IT. My motto is don't talk about it, BE about it, and she was. And her book "Death of Hustler" is the hotness. Get this book today, you will not be disappointed.

(3.5 Stars) The Hustler Within,
This review is from: Death of a Hustler (Paperback)
Yanique Jones is young, sexy paralegal trapped between her professional life and street life. She's also stuck in a dead end relationship with her boyfriend Beemer. But when she meets another hustler named Twiss, Beemer could be a distant memory. Beemer thinks he is invincible and puts Yanique on the back burner. Beemer is on top of the world when his friend Lite puts him on to the family business. But things become strained between them when Beemer takes an unnecessary risk that could cost them everything that they've worked for. Lite has always taken on a big brother role towards Yanique. But now he's trying to suppress some less than brotherly feelings towards her...especially now that Yanique is starting to notice.
Death of a Hustler is an exciting debut novel by Rorie. Rorie brought an interesting twist on a urban fiction tale. At first glance, this story looks like the typical girl sticking by her hustler boyfriend but it's so much more. Readers really get to see how one's childhood can really shape that person's life. You'll actually find yourself feeling sympathy for Beemer towards the end of the novel. There are some shocking developments in this story that you'll need to pay close attention to. Although this was a wonderful story, the numerous editing errors made the flow of the novel somewhat problematic. Aside from that, Death of a Hustler is still a good debut novel from Rorie. Good read, TERRIBLE EDITING!,

This review is from: Death of a Hustler (Paperback)
This book actually has a good plot. Yanique is a faithful, good, around the way chick who dates a looser named Beamer. Yanique ends up with Lite and there's tons of juicy drama in between. It's definitely not boring, my only problem with this book was the TERRIBLE EDITING! It was sooooooooo bad! Of course most urban fictions are not gonna be 100% grammatically correct, but in this book the commas, periods, quote marks, etc were ALL over the place and misused! It made it hard to understand at some parts, like I would read a sentence and then re-do it in my head, saying ok that's what they meant. The editing was just pitiful. But besides that overall Death of a Hustler is a great read, I would recommend it.

I loved Death Of A Hustler under it's glitz and grimy title, is a love story. Yanique is a young female searching for love she known since childhood. Yanique and Lite grew up together and as friends they held a close relationship. Then Beemer steps in and sweeps Yani off her feet before Lite could express his true feelings. So indepth into hustling Lite puts Beemer on and it instantly goes to Beemer's head, he starts neglecting Yani until he goes to prison then he shows more of his ugly side. But through it all Lite remains Yanique's friend until she sees the man for her is the man she always known since childhood. Lite's sexy, strong, dangerous and a standup guy he steps up when Yanique needs someone the most and fulfills her every need with the backing of both their families, while trying to regain what he lost Beemer a dying hustler realizes life moved on for both Yani & Lite, a fast pace street tale of romance, friendship, maturity and acceptance, a must read.

The book was the bomb! I was in the same place as Yanique. My ex did the same thing to me. Only thing he wasn't a drug dealer; he was a straight up fool. I'm just like Yanique, but I could only take so much. Now he's trying to come back and think I'm the same, but I'm not. The book did have a lot of typographic I just reread it without the extra wordings. In other words I would request this book to all the people who say they like reading.

This book was a page turner from the very first page. So realistic that I could hardly put the book down. It was like I could picture these characters as if I was watching a movie (that's how vivid the descriptions were). Looking forward to a sequel.

The Many Types of Death,
By The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers (RAWSISTAZ.com and BlackBookReviews.net) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Death of a Hustler (Paperback)
DEATH OF A HUSTLER is the debut novel of Rorie which revolves around the lives of three main characters, Beemer, Lite and Yanique. As the novel begins, Beemer and Yanique are in a troubled relationship. Beemer is caught up in the drug game and running the streets with other women. One woman in particular is Brina, his on again off again lover, who he'll soon regret knowing. Lite is also caught up in the hustle, but unlike Beemer he is not interested in a bunch of women. Ever since he was young, Lite has only had eyes for one person. Yanique is a devoted girlfriend to Beemer, but is growing tired of dealing with his infidelity. Not only that, she finds herself struggling with feelings for Lite. When Beemer's life takes a turn for the worst and Yanique gets two surprises in the same week, all three of their lives will be changed. Throughout the course of the novel the reader will travel along witnessing the ups and downs of Beemer, Lite, and Yanique's lives, plus the lives of other characters along for the ride.
DEATH OF A HUSTLER is a multi-layered novel with different stories going on at the same time. This keeps the novel from being predictable, but it also makes the plot seem underdeveloped, confusing, and does not come full circle. There are inconsistencies throughout the novel as well. Also, while the author admits that the novel is not written using the standard grammar as its template, I could not ignore the many typographical errors and editing issues. As a result of the lack of editing and improper formatting, the characters' voices run together and it is often hard to tell which character is speaking. Pacing is also an issue as well. Although I tried to enjoy DEATH OF A HUSTLER, personally I feel that the lack of plot development and editorial issues prevented me from doing so, leaving me unfulfilled.
