4.0 out of 5 stars Death Jr. 2: Root of Evil....., May 19, 2007

This review is from: Death Jr. 2: Root of Evil (Video Game)
Being that it was the first game, shown in public, to showcase what the PSP was capable of; alot fell on the shoulders of Death Jr. Much was expected of the game and, in that respect, Death Jr. was met with mixed reviews on its' release. Had it not been the very first game that introduced the Playstation Portable to the world, it might have been a good success. In my honest opinion, the game had a charm all it's own(a gothic Tim Burtonesque charm) despite its' passing similarities to Psychonauts & Ratchet and Clank. The fact that the game suffered from uneven levels and was overly aggressive at times never really mattered as you were having fun. There was just something about the game that grew on you. Fast forward to Halloween 2006, Backbone Entertainment releases Death Jr. 2:Root of Evil and, while it has taken me this long to write a review for the game, here are my feelings on the game.

You'll notice many things different about this game. First and foremost, the developers did their best to flesh out the storyline alot better in this game. You'll notice more FMV in the game this time to push things along. Second, there's another playable character in the game-Pandora. Third, some things are gone from the game(which I'll leave you to figure out) replaced by others things but much better for it gameplaywise. Fourth, there's more of a variety of bigger-smarter monsters to fight
though the pace is less frantic and more strategic. Fifth, there's more moves and weapons to use. And, last but certainly not least, it looks absolutely amazing in the graphics department. This time, you'll notice that there is use of High Dynamic Range Lighting in the game(a first I'm told in a Playstation Portable game) which gives things in the game a more realistic 3-D look than the cartoony look the previous game had. The only thing I seen wrong with the game was that the levels again were uneven yet I think that may be intentional with this series considering the fact that the game deals with a Tim Burtonesque take on the afterlife & whatnot.

In conclusion, Death Jr.2:Root of Evil is a solid action platformer that's more polished and more enjoyable the second time around. Sure, it might meet with mixed reviews as did the first but you'll not find a platformer with more style and humor than this game.

Last words? Well, Backbone- if you're reading this(as I know alot of developers come to these parts to see what people say about their games)- how about giving us a console version of Death Jr. to play. Next up is Death Jr. and the Science Fair of Doom on the Nintendo DS, I know(and I'll be there) but I'd love to see a console version with more scope and even more insane challenge. Death Jr. shows alot of potential and I'd like to see it up there alongside the bigboys. You've got something good going on here.

If you liked Death Jr, you'll love Dj2. Better graphics, better story line, cool weapons and definately worth the price. Only downside is the lock-on feature for your weapons can be a little agrivating, other than that a great game.

Controls are silky smooth, first game to show HDR visuals on PSP. Nice crispy game play. At less than 20$; this game is a great steal.
