5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Realism
Speaking as a former member of the military i can tell you that this book tells it like it is. Unlike some of the other books of this type where the author either A: is a reporter and never served in the military or B: The author thinks that he is the best that ever was and that he was never afraid. The B type are usually entertaining but not very real. This is a great...

3.0 out of 5 stars Very descriptive, but also very repetitive
The book was very good and descriptive, almost too descriptive in some parts, but it was also very repetitive. I really got tired of reading about overnight ambushes! All the missions described in the book, except a mere 1, was part of an overnight ambush. Very well written though.

Speaking as a former member of the military i can tell you that this book tells it like it is. Unlike some of the other books of this type where the author either A: is a reporter and never served in the military or B: The author thinks that he is the best that ever was and that he was never afraid. The B type are usually entertaining but not very real. This is a great daily account of Gary's 1st tour in Vietnam. He tells it like it is from the rides to town through sniper fire to get a beer to the death the he caused and witnessed in the jungle. I have read many books about the Navy Seals both A and B versions and in my opinion this book is in a class by itself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Good and Enlightening Book, September 21, 2000
This review is from: Death in the Jungle, Diary of a Navy Seal (Mass Market Paperback)
This book was one of the best books I've read about the Navy SEALs in combat. The author did a good job in letting his audience know what he was feeling at the time. Yeah, the missions got a little repetitive, but that's life, thing get repeated. This wasn't some fiction book where the author could make every mission different from the others. Overall I think the book did about as good a job as any book could do to show people what being a SEAL was like.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!!!!!! Fell the perfume of the jungle!!!!!!!!!, April 30, 1997

RM2 Smith, Point/Swimmer/Rifleman, Shotgun. 257 combat missions in Nam under his belt. He gives you an outstanding description of the missions at the Nam's Jungle. I've read the 314 pages of the book in 3 days. Smith grabs you until the last page of the last mission. Reading the book you became one of the Foxtrot Platoon's member, real near the VC and between MM2 Funkhouser and RM2 Smith...............Just dont miss it.....its a real good non-fiction Vietnam portrait!!!!!!! 5 stars ***** book

5.0 out of 5 stars Death In The Jungle, June 12, 2007
This review is from: Death in the Jungle, Diary of a Navy Seal (Mass Market Paperback)
Deep in the jungle and behind enemy lines. You hear something in the water. What do you do? This is the setting for the book Death in the jungle by Gary R smith and Alan Maki.

In this story Gary serves 5 tours in the Vietnam War. He tells about his missions and the pros and cons of being a Navy Seal. My favorite mission he told was when his team and he are on a 24 hour river ambush at night. They hear something floating down the river. Seeing only the outline of the object they open fire on what they thought was the enemy. After blowing away half of their rounds they realized it was just a log.

The theme of this book is war is not always a good thing. People die and sometimes nothing is accomplished. This was a great book to read. It was full of details and action packed missions. I had a hard time putting it down. I would recommend strongly that you read this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Navy Seal book out there, June 11, 2003

I have read just about every Navy Seal book out there and this one is by far the best one. The way the teams can turn it on and off like a light switch from cold calculated killers and then back to normal is unbeleivable...

I've read several Navy Seal books ,this one along with "ELEMENT OF SURPRISE" By Daryl Young are by far the most descriptive books I've ever read. I could almost feel the stickyness of the air while the missions are discribed in great detail.

5.0 out of 5 stars I LOVED IT!!!!!!!!!!, October 1, 1998

This book showed how boring ambushes could be for hours and then full of adrenaline and excitement the next moment. I could not put this book down for three days. It is one of the best books I have read about Navy SEALs in Vietnam. I would definitely recommend buying this book.
