I first picked up Andrew Grant's new book Even, and after reading it, I had to buy everything he has written. He writes in a gritty, real way, putting you in the room with his characters. Death in the Kingdom stars British agent Daniel Swann. Swann is one of the most believable characters I've come across in a long time. He's no superhero. He isn't morally superior nor an idealist. He is a guy who does his job, questioning himself along the way. The locations are described in excellent detail without being overly verbose. The writing alternates between the first person (Swann) and the third, which I usually don't care for, but in this case it WORKS! Outstanding! A MUST read for anyone into the spy genre.

I'm not sure where to start. I like the noir style for a change occasionally, it does come across gritty and very real. But...one of the things I look for in a book is some semblance of plausibility, and it's almost to talk about the characters, the style, or anything else since the premise of this is so impossible that I can't get past it. Simply put, almost nothing in this book could possibly ever happen in life. I get it, it's a novel, it wouldn't be a story if it didn't have some fantastic elements to it, but I have to be able to read a story and have some part of me think 'yeah, this could happen'. Never got that in any way from this, from page one forward.
