Editorial Reviews

Serenity's third album embarks on a journey to discover the historic figures of ages past. Embellished in symphonic metal garb, Christopher Columbus, Giacom Casanova, Sir Francis Drake, Queen Elizabeth I, and many more prominent figures take center stage on Death & Legacy. The band masterfully unites the emotions and thoughts of these famed characters with the fitting musical interludes that allow them to tell their tales. The first pressing will include 2 bonus tracks. For fans of Kamelot, Epica, Sonata Arctica and Avantasia.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Serenity Album So Far.... May 6, 2011
Format:Audio CD
Perhaps I've just been living under a rock, but I hadn't heard about Serenity until just earlier this year. A symphonic power metal band hailing from Austria, Serenity combines symphonic instruments with melodic, heavy metal, powerful guitars and near-theatrical, soaring male vocals. I was first introduced through the band's single "Serenade of Flames," from their new album Death & Legacy since the song features guest vocals from Charlotte Wessels of Delain (of which I am already a fan), it popped up on my Internet radar.

After falling in love with the song, I grabbed both of the band's previous albums in anticipation of the third one's release. Sadly, I was a little disappointed. While the music was good, it just didn't feel like it was on the same level and not nearly as epic as "Serenade of Flames." Plus, as someone used to listening to mostly female-fronted metal, I found that I had to adjust my ear somewhat to Georg's unique voice. But, with each song, I felt like the band was just getting started and not quite there yet...then I listened to Death & Legacy when it came out, and was completely enthralled. Serenity reaches new levels of metal epicness here that are unlike any I've ever heard before. From the first song to the last, I was completely in love with this album.

Death & Legacy is a concept album that uses a wide range of instruments and styles to explores the stories of a collection of historical figures such as Marco Polo, Christopher Columbus, Elizabeth I, Joan of Arc and others. Basically, the entire album can be summed up in the song "My Legacy," an epic mix of flawless guitar work, soaring vocals and excellent orchestral parts that drives home the theme that, those these figures may fade away with time, their legacy remains.

For Serenity's 3rd album, Death & Legacy, the band takes the listener back in time and tells the stories of historical figures such as Marco Polo, Sir Francis Drake, Christopher Columbus, etc.

Serenity is a power-metal band from Austria, and their albums feature great production and outstanding musicianship, though they aren't a 'shredders' band, like Dragonforce and the like. Think more like Kamelot or Queen Of The Ryche/The Warning-era Queensryche, but with fantasy/historical lyrics instead.

While Death & Legacy didn't grab me quite as much as their 2nd album 'Fallen Sanctuary', it is a very fine, quality release none the less, and should satisfy fans of the band, and fans of European-styled power metal as well.

Guest vocalists on the songs 'The Chevalier' and the track 'Prayer' by Ailyn (Sirenia); the song 'Changing Fate' by Amanda Somerville (Kiske/Somerville, Epica, Avantasia): and the song 'Serenade Of Flames' by Charlotte Wessels (Delain).

For fans of Kamelot, Sonata Arctica, Seventh Wonder, Blind Guardian, Helloween, Symphony X

5.0 out of 5 stars A Different Sound September 11, 2011
Format:Audio CD
This album seems much better produced than the previous two. The sound has also changed. It is more symphonic metal rather than focusing on the speed medal shown in the first two albums.

The first two albums sounded more like early Kamelot. Some may not like that it sounds a little more "mainstream", but I think it is an even more enjoyable sound for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful June 28, 2013
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
I'll keep it simple. If you like progressive/symphonic rock/metal, you'll love this album. I grew up loving Yes, early Genesis, Moody Blues, ELP, Alan Parsons Project, Rick Wakeman, Jeff Wayne. This progressive metal genre is taking me to new territory and I LOVE it. Serenity is one of my favorites now, along with Kamelot, Within Temptation and Nightwish. Stirring, sweeping, thrilling, dramatic, visceral, gorgeous. Great stuff. Turn down the lights. Turn up the music.
