Book Description

Henrie O Mysteries February 1997

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

A talented journalism student is murdered because of her investigation into three old, unsolved crimes in this third, fairly routine Henrie O mystery (Scandal in Fair Haven, 1994). Henrietta O'Dwyer Collins, a widowed newspaperwoman, teaches journalism at Thorndyke University in Missouri. Her student Maggie Winslow is found dead in the Lovers' Lane where two undergraduates were murdered 10 years earlier. Henrie O decides to find Maggie's killer but first must discover which of the old crimes Maggie was probing led to her murder: the 1988 Lovers' Lane murders; the shooting of local businessman Curt Murdoch in 1982; or the 1976 disappearance of Dean of Students Darryl Nugent. Following Maggie's trail, Henrie O searches through newspaper files and interviews old witnesses and new suspects, including a womanizing journalist and his angry wife; a high-living English professor and his father-in-law, a novelist; and the cold, controlling president of Thorndyke. Henrie O makes accusations in a process of elimination and places herself in jeopardy before she solves the crimes, to the embarrassment of the university powers-that-be, an eventuality that strongly suggests that Henrie O's next adventure won't be set in Missouri. Henrie O fans will surely enjoy this latest adventure, although Hart's Death on Demand series, featuring bookstore owner Annie Darling, better illustrates her light touch and humor. 35,000 first printing; author tour.

From Library Journal

Compared favorably to Christie's Jane Marple, sixtyish amateur sleuth Henrie O investigates murder once again. When one of her journalism students at Thorndyke University is murdered after suggesting a report on three unsolved campus-related murders, Henrie feels compelled to uncover the truth. Watch for demand.

Carolyn Hart writes the Death on Demand series set in a mystery bookstore on a South Carolina sea island and the Bailey Ruth Raeburn series featuring a lively redheaded ghost. Coming in 2012 from Berkley Prime Crime will be DEATH COMES SILENTLY, 22nd in the Death on Demand series, and WHAT THE CAT SAW, fist in the series featuring Nela Farley who has an uncanny sense of cats' thoughts.

She moves a body, investigates a murder, saves a marriage, prevents a suicide, and--in a fiery finale--rescues a child who knows too much. In Merry, Merry Ghost, Bailey Ruth protects a little boy from danger. In Ghost in Trouble, Bailey Ruth tries to corral a wilful woman determined to play hunt-the-killer. Coming in 2013 is HIJACKED GHOST which puts Bailey Ruth at risk of ever returning to Heaven.

Letter from Home, a WWII novel set on the home front, received the Agatha Award for Best Mystery of 2003. It was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize by the Oklahoma Center for Poets and Writers. Thirteen-year-old Gretchen Gilman is working for the small-town newspaper during the hot summer of 1944. Murder occurs on the street where she lives, forever changing her life and the lives of those involved.

Hart was one of 10 mystery authors featured at the National Book Festival on the Mall in Washington, DC, in 2003 for Letter from Home and again in 2007 for Set Sail for Murder, 7th in the Henrie O series. Hart has been nominated 9 times for the Agatha Award for Best Novel and has won 3 times. In 2007 she received the Lifetime Achievement Award at Malice Domestic. She will be the International Guest of Honor at Bloody Words in Toronto on June 6-8, 2008.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book you'll want to snuggle up with!, February 19, 2000
I read Death in Lovers' Lane a little over a year ago and still can't get over how much I enjoyed it! I couldn't put it down, and whenever I had to, I couldn't wait to get back to it. I was even sad to finish it. Carolyn Hart has written a cozy mystery in which Henrie O. solves not one case of suspicious death, but four! This book keeps you guessing and keeps you reading with intricate plot lines and engaging characters, the most engaging one being Henrie O. herself. This book is another score for Carolyn Hart and for the ever-more-charming Henrie O.

5.0 out of 5 stars I really enjoy the Henry O mysteries, December 15, 2001
By
I find that these mysteries are a bit darker and bit deeper than Ms. Hart's Death on Demand series. However, they are worth the time to read them. I have enjoyed everyone I've read. This book was no exception.

Henrie O is a strong female who has not yet let go of her old reporting attitude although now she's a college prof. She encourages one of her young students, Maggie, to dig deeper into an old mystery of three murders. Maggie begins to do that and ends up dead. Henrie O decides that maybe it was her fault, that she pushed Maggie into the killers path. So picking up the path, Henrie O tries to figure out who killed Maggie and why.

All of the Henrie O novels begin with a short introductory type of chapter but quickly develop into a great mystery. The characters are well thought out.

These Henrie O books are very different from the Death on Demand series. The mysteries are a bit deeper and a bit darker. However, that doesn't make this series any less enjoyable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Henrie O in her element, May 29, 2006

Miss Ivonne (Louisville, KY USA) - See all my reviews
In the first two Henrie O mysteries, you read references about Henrietta Collins having been a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, but it's in this book that you get to actually see her strut her stuff. In "Death in Lovers' Lane," Henrie O is teaching at a college in Missouri that is a thinly disguised version of the University of Missouri and its excellent journalism school. Henrie O assigns an arrogant but brilliant student named Maggie Winslow to turn up new evidence in three unsolved cases from long ago. When Maggie turns up dead the very next day, a guilt-ridden Henrie O suspects that it's her assignment that led to Maggie's death, and the former journalist sets out to find out who the killer is.

In the process, the intrepid Henrie O reinvestigates the three unsolved cases. She finds out the secret to not one death, but of six. Henrie O demonstrates the grit, tenacity, intelligence, and integrity you'd expect from a world-class reporter.

I know most readers prefer the Death on Demand series. As for me, I'm sticking with Henrie O. I hope you do, too.
