Book Description

August 1, 1987
It's a glorious spring morning in the village of Ashthorpe. Birds are singing, and sunlight is dancing on the river, where Mry Gedge's dress drifts lazily in the shallows and flowers mingle in her hair. The scene is so altogether lovely that some locals think dreamily of Ophelia, drowned for love of noble Hamlet. Chief Inspector Quantrill, though, has little patience for that kind of self-indulgence; he's got a murder to solve. And with a passionless marriage, a job that centers mostly on recovering stolen pigs, and the certain knowledge that he's missed his best chance for romance, he's something of a prisoner of pragmatism. Mary Gedge may indeed have died for love of the wrong man, but in his muddy English market town, that man is unlikely to be a prince of Denmark.

Almost too good to be true....One of those delightful finds...it has atmosphere, a literate style, and characters that come alive --Washington Post --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars very enjoyable on several levels, April 22, 2007

the opening sentence was worth the price of the book. the author has a wonderful way with words and an entertainingly wry and ironic attitude. she also has a wonderful way with character and dialogue.

the plot is better than average for a first mystery, with clues fairly presented. still, experienced mystery readers will probably guess the culprit's identity. however, the motivation is interesting and believable.

i enjoyed it enough to read the next in the series.

Radley's first novel in this series has a couple of things going for it. First of all, she does a beautiful job describing life in rural England. She really does this well.

Two, the interplay between the young educated up and coming Tait and his boss, the uneducated Quantrill has a fair amount of dynamic tension, and there is a lot of room to take this forward in the series to some interesting places.

However, the book is marred seriously by several giveaways that suggest who the really killer is way too early. I had strong suspicions by the first third and was certain of who it was half way through. Radley would have done better with half the clues exposed she did.

I'm generally a fan of the Fellony and Mayhem crimer series, but this is one of the weaker entries in it.
