This book is a very good little mystery for middle grade readers. There are many unique characters and a satisfying plot. There are many descriptions of perfume making and funerary customs of Ancient Egypt. This book will enhance any students knowledge of that time period.

I love historical fiction, and one of my favorite historical periods is Ancient Egypt. I am always interested in fresh stories based in that era. So I was a little disappointed that this story did not quite come up to my expectations.

The biggest problem I have with Death of a Princess is that, for whatever reason, the Amazon listing describes it as at the young adult reading level, but it is definitely at more of a middle-school to grade-school level. The author, Susan Geason, spells everything out for you - if Meryet is worried or confused or has any other emotion, the author tells you, rather than leaving you to figure that out from the character's thoughts and actions, which always make it obvious enough. But the flip-side of all this over-explaining is that there are also a lot of quite good descriptive passages.

One hitch in the story for me is that Isis, the princess who dies, comes back as a golden cat to guide Meryet to her killer. I don't approve of ghosts very much.

The rest of the story, while not anything spectacular or ground-breaking, would be fine for 9-13 year olds, and as a read-aloud for younger kids. I liked the bits of "Ancient Egyptian" scattered throughout the narrative, and the VERY (for the book's apparent age-group target) in-depth descriptions of Meryet's perfume, salve, and unguent recipes.
