Where to start?,
This review is from: The Death Proclamation of Generation X: A Self-Fulfilling Prophesy of Goth, Grunge and Heroin (Paperback)
Ok...for the purposes of something to read on a sunday afternoon with nothing else to do as a basic introduction to this topic, this book would be ok, but as a reliable piece of academic material I wouldn't rate it at all. The overall tone of the book is so opinionated and journalistic that it very much distracts from the what the actual point is. All in all, this book is not what it claims to be. It reads more like a novel interspersed with extremely biased sentiment on the author's part. Every time I find myself having to go back to it as a reference it makes me cross. Verdict: buy this book if you know nothing about the subject and want a brief introduction, but if you're doing academic research, avoid it like the plague.

Yes, I wish I had this most entertaining, fact-filled book available when I was vainly trying to understand what my generation x niece was all about during some difficult times. Furek has obviously done extensive research into this important demographic group and has produced a highly readable and informative book which examines the dynamic interplay between xer's music, drugs, and cultural mores. The various chapters provide a wealth of fascinating reading for anyone interested in this unique generational group and their influence on contemporary culture. A great book for the cultural anthropology student studying various demographic groups as well as the reader searching for entertainment and intellectual stimulation. Really enjoyed it!

How can many times can an author use the word despondent? Sometimes within a 2 paragraph distance in between...It's looks like there wasn't enough time spent looking for typos or errors. Additionally, quotes begin with inverted comas and sometimes end without it. Editing was an amateur job, for sure.
As for content I found it mildly interesting; I don't understand what Anne Nicole Smith has to do with the subject (the mere fact that someone was born in a specific time range doesn't make it iconic of an era), except for commercial interest (but not coherence). The parts about grunge and heroin addiction are the best parts.

Not bad, considering a boomer wrote it,

Being part of the demographic Ive read alot about the subjeect. This one was pretty good (I always hesitate to compliment boomers, mostly because theyre so quick to compliment themselves). The author is a little clueless, talking about "grunge" fashion (theres an oxymoron for you). Also he focuses alot on heroin use, but for all his babbling on the subject he never points out the obvious-heroin is a painkiller, and it works just as well for mental pain as for physical. Overall its a fun one day read.
