Editorial Reviews

Director Quentin Tarantino delivers an adrenaline shot to the heart with Death Proof, "a tribute to balls-out pedal-to-the-metal car chases" (Pete Hammond, Maxim). Featuring exhilarating high-speed action, jaw-dropping stunts, and some of the most quotable lines since Pulp Fiction, Death Proof "goes faster, and funnier, than you thought possible...and then it goes further" (Ty Burr, Boston Globe). Kurt Russell stars as a sociopathic stuntman whose taste for stalking sexy young ladies gets him into big trouble when he tangles with the wrong gang of badass babes. Their confrontation escalates to a hair-raising, 18-minute automotive duel with one of the girls strapped to the hood of a thundering Dodge Challenger that "earns a place of honor among the great movie car chases" (Scott Foundas, LA Weekly).

'Network connected features for this disk are not yet available. Please check back for updates.' - is what I get when I go to Special Features/BD LIVE. The message is hard-coded into the disk (no attempts are made to actually go online to check for updates) so the BD LIVE option could be a joke but I suspect that not everyone is going to 'get' it.

With or without BD Live, when it comes to a Tarantino movie, I'm a two-timer. I simply HAD to have the Blu version of Death Proof even though, past experience with the Kill Bill 'Blus' was a strong indication that this first Blu-ray edition wasn't going to offer much more than the DVD on-purpose-trashy-looking package. And almost right I was. As with the Kill Bills, the Blu edition has, on one disk only (nice), the 'extended and unrated' version of the movie and all the extras found on the 2-DVD edition. The 3 extra extras not found on the DVD are:

- The uncut version of 'Baby, it's you' with Mary Elizabeth Winstead (absolutely beautiful, a capella)
- A Death Proof 'international trailer' presented in VCR-like resolution (if he likes the way you move, then he decides the way you die)
- Extended music cues, whatever they are
- BD Live (see the first paragraph) for the full explanation
- Audio is available in English, French, Italian and Spanish, ALL as 5.1 Dolby, with the default English sound as 5.1 TrueHD.

Discussing the picture quality of a movie that's 'scratched' on purpose is not easy. Speaking for myself, I ALWAYS notice a significant improvement between DVD and HD. So, to me, the scratches on the BD edition look sharper :) and the TrueHD sound is superior to the DVD experience,

My verdict: I do not regret getting the Blu edition. It's not a revolutionary leap when compared to the DVD but the overall better quality, the one-disk convenience and the few extra do justify the purchase to me (and a friend is going to get the DVD). However, I WILL take away one star for the 'BD Live' joke.

ACTION & SUSPENSE! February 27, 2009
Format:Blu-ray|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a visually stunning adventure worthy to be in anyone's Blu-Ray collection! I am particularly satisfied that this is an extended version of the film, which includes the steamy lap-dance that was cut short from the movie theaters. The action progresses with the movie, and the sound of the roaring engines really put you in the drivers seat. If you have a sound system with your home theater setup, you will enjoy this!

MOVIE:
"Death Proof" - part two of the Rodriguez/Tarantino "Grindhouse" feature - is, simply put, a darn good time. The movie pays homage to both horror films and car flicks from the 60s & 70s, and it does so quite well. If you were a fan of "Vanishing Point", "Bullet", "Dirty Mary Crazy Larry", etc. then you'll love Tarantino's take on mean cars being driven at high speeds. The movie may start off a bit slow for some of today's audience, but if you're more of a fan of getting to know and love the characters then you likely won't even notice. After about the 20 minute mark you'll be sucked in and by the last 30 minutes you'll pretty much only be sitting on the edge of your seat.

BLU RAY:
The "Death Proof" master was purposefully scratched and beat up, which does an excellent job of imparting the feeling that you're really watching an old car movie. You can tell the video quality wants to shine through, however, and I think the Blu Ray version is definitely worth picking up over the DVD. Even though the film is scratched, you never see any aliasing or video artifacts that would suggest a sub-par transfer. The movie looks exactly as it should. Now, "Part 2" of the movie (no further detail given to avoid spoilers) is where the Blu Ray quality really gets a chance to shine. The scratches go away and the film is presented in greyscale as the setting is transitioned. Then, almost abruptly, the film switches to full, gorgeous (blemish-free) color. The contrast to the panchromatic footage is astounding. Rich colors fill the screen and stay for the remainder of the movie.

Overall, a great film for anyone looking for a tense-but-not-too-serious Saturday night special. Definitely recommended.

Good movie, bad company
I had already seen this movie, I just wanted my own copy. But it arrived with a blank generic Memorex DVD-R inside. I'll be lodging my complaint.

Pretty good
The story was good in a campy 70s revenge movie type of way. A little far fetched but enjoyable. The acting & action was good.

What movie are you people watching?
This movie is boring!!!! Except for the last 10 minutes this movie is just people talking!!! And its not even interesting dialogue like Tarantino usually writes for his movies. Read more

Great Movie, Good Stuff
If you're a fan of the movie, you'll like this purchase. Nothing flashy, but being in HD does make it look better than watching a standard DVD.

Yawn!
Death Proof is insane. In a very bad way. It is so slow. The whole movie goes for about 2 hours. 1 hour 40 minutes of nonsense girl talk at best. Read more

Interesting concept.
I am a huge fan, but QT made this and then everyone in the room (watching) nauseous. Truthfully, kids cannot rationally watch it- no doubt obvious. Read more

yawn...
For an exploitation flick this one sure is slow. Plenty of mindless banter and girl talk but little action. The car chase at the end is great if you can stay awake for it. Read more
