Book Description

February 12, 2007
Darrell Breedlove is having difficulty making inroads in his musical career, but one thing is certain: He plays guitar as well as he shoots. The youngest son of an eccentric auto mechanic, Darrell flourishes as a youth in Tucson, Arizona, under the hub of his family's famous body shop. The passion that drives Darrell into adulthood is crossed by nightmarish events, culminating in a gunfight on New Year's Day. In the name of self-defense, Darrell's marksmanship puts to shame Jake McKenzie, son of a judge who once sent Darrell's brother to prison, reigniting a feud between the two families. The gunfight unites Darrell with Jenica Allison, a drug-addled New Yorker, and triggers their exile to Los Angeles. There, the couple grapples with new-found stardom as they storm LA's teacherous social scene. Darrell works as a mechanic trying to get his band off the ground while Jenica waits tables at a hipster joint. When Jack Hilton, a writer and old college chum catches wind of the gunfight that brought Darrell to LA, he sees an opportunity for publicity for both of them. Jack writes a story about Darrell for the local alternative press, mentioning an audition whereby Darrell pieces together his band. Jake is angered by news of his nemesis' strides toward success and Jenica's old drug habit provides an excuse for the Cronies, a chick motorcycle gang, to side with him. Ghosts from the past come knocking on Darrell's door, and they're not after money or fame. They want blood. Will the evil that plagues the two troubled lovebirds force them apart?

About the Author

Ryan Hyatt attributes his passion for writing to an adventurous upbringing and active imagination. He was born in Tucson in 1976. Ryan and his two younger sisters spent childhood living in communities throughout Arizona and California. He returned to his hometown to earn a bachelor's degree from the University of Arizona in 1999. Working as an editor for a defunct horse trade magazine, and then as an auto liability investigator, Ryan sold his car to move to Barcelona, Spain in October 2002, fed up with corporate life. His experiences culminated in "Friends of the Night," an unpublished memoir written at age 25. Failing to find a job in Spain, he returned to the United States four months later destitute and despondent because his foreign conquest didn't last. Ryan spent the remainder of his twenties moving back and forth between Phoenix and Los Angeles working as a journalist. It was in the throes of his love/hate relationship with conservatism and liberalism, the United States and Europe, Arizona and California, music and monotony, his friends and himself, that Ryan wrote his debut novel.

More About the Author

Ryan Marshall Hyatt attributes his passion for storytelling to an adventurous upbringing and active imagination. He was born in Tucson, Arizona on October 20, 1976.
After his parents divorced when he was five, Ryan's mother remarried and he and his two sisters spent childhood living in communities throughout Arizona and Southern California. Always adapting to change, Ryan made his roots writing.
Ryan bypassed his father's wishes to embark on a military career and confronted him as a teenager with what he saw for his future instead, a liberal education to support his writing habit. The disagreement caused a schism that, along with other factors, ended their relationship. Father and son resumed speaking seventeen years later.
In 1999, Ryan graduated from the University of Arizona in Tucson with a bachelors of arts degree in history, psychology and creative writing.
Working as an editor for a short-lived horse trade magazine, and other odd office jobs, Ryan sold his truck and moved to Barcelona, Spain in October 2002, fed up with corporate life. Failing to find work, he returned to the United States a few months later destitute and despondent because his foreign conquest didn't last.
Ryan spent the rest of his twenties moving back and forth between Phoenix and Los Angeles employed as a journalist. In the throes of his love/hate relationship with conservatism and liberalism, the United States and Europe, Arizona and California, music and monotony, his friends and himself, Ryan wrote his debut novel, "The Death of Rock 'n' Roll: A Biography of Darrell Breedlove."

4.0 out of 5 stars Hyatt goes Gonzo in the Wild Wild West, July 27, 2007

Well written, entertaining and romantic. This is a story of youthful ideals clashing with the decadence of adulthood. It's a tale of struggle involving politics, gun slinging, and of course love. I found myself reading it very quickly, curious and excited about what comes next.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ryan Hyatt creates landscape/portraiture in words with Death of Rock n Roll, March 12, 2008
By

This review is from: The Death of Rock 'n' Roll: A Biography of Darrell Breedlove (Paperback)
Hyatt plays up every cliche that I love to hate about Arizona and Los Angeles while maintaining a homesick reverence for their quirks. Even better, within the twists and turns of the plot are interludes of character revelation: Hyatt's insights on the dynamics of the human mind on its own and with family, friends and lovers are shockingly intimate. I look forward to his next novel, having had this taste of what I would describe as a combination of landscape and portraiture in words.

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Death of Rock 'n' Roll: A Biography of Darrell Breedlove (Paperback)
Captivating from the start, this turned out to be a fast-paced, emotional ride with real insight into corruption, rebellion, chasing life to the edge, and most importantly: Rock and Roll! Darrell is a true-handed hero in a story that takes us on a present day tour from cowboy justice in Arizona to the no bullschit realities of the Hollywood Dream. The Death of Rock n Roll, was highly recommended to me and is well worth reading!
