Warning...if you are easily offended by political in-correctness and gratuitous stereotyping of every ethnic, religious, and political group out there across the spectrum of our society, then this probably isn't the book for you. But if you're looking for a razor-sharp satire about how reality television, corporate entertainment and mass media are contributing to the slow self-strangulation of American culture, then read on.
The (anti) hero of this story is one Rudy Reicher, a reality show producer for the Global Boadcast Company, living and working in a dystopian Los Angeles of the near-future. In this time, reality shows have become an even bigger blight on the social landscape then they are now, and decidedly more extreme...live executions on TV, the latest seasons of Survivor taking place in the war zones of Afghanistan, where being voted off the island has bee replaced by being blown up. Rudy Reicher is the king of this crass world, like Simon Cowell but more obnoxious, responsible for show like LA Police Chases, Riot Busters, and Intern Scandals...but lately he's in a bit of a rut. His latest venture has just gone belly up, when the daredevil biker he was filming ended up in the hospital after a horrific crash. The network brass are concerned about the increasing number of lawsuits they're facing, while protestors march in front of their offices, demanding an end to the televised filth ruining the country...and resorting to bombings and terrorism to make their point.
In short, Rudy needs a hit, and being a man with a keen understanding of what TV audiences want, comes with his latest masterpiece - The Death Row Show, where six criminals on death row would be housed in a specially built prison, their lives filmed for viewing masses eager for more bloodshed and mayhem.Read more ›
