From Booklist
Belle Appleman, the smart and feisty widow with a talent for detective work, returns after a lengthy hiatus (Death and Blintzes, 1985). It is the mid-1930s in Boston, and the Great Depression is making it hard to earn a living, but Belle has a job as a clerk in a drugstore. One evening, a young woman staggers into the drugstore and collapses. Belle helps her, but she dies in the hospital. Suspecting foul play, Belle, her friends from evening English class, and police officer Jim Connors investigate. Among the suspects are some Beacon Hill physicians with shady connections, the victim's fiance, and the gangster brother of another drugstore employee. While solving the crime, Belle must also juggle a few men with romantic interests and concerned friends in her Jewish immigrant community. The story provides a colorful glimpse of Depression-era Boston and a plot with a surprising conclusion that will hold the reader's interest. Let's hope that Belle's next adventure will not be another 15 years away. Barbara Bibel
