Any book that opens with the slaughtering of a basilisk is going to be fun (that's not a spoiler-it would have taken out half of the characters in the first three pages if it had lived).
What really adds to this edition of the FREAKS story is the fact that we can now read about Bea's (and in a smaller way, Oliver and Will's) backstory. It made for intriguing character development and made some characters that had skewed a little predictable (ever randy vampire etc) far more complex; choices that were made in the first two novels can now be better understood.
Sidenote: as a lover of all kinds of Easter eggs, I have to say I really like where these hints about Oliver's role in the Midnight, VA series are going. I have no idea what it all means, but it's kind of nice to get a rabid fan shout-out.

After the events of the last story, Bea is on the outs with most of the team. The FREAKS are split down the middle with some siding with her and the rest siding with Will. But a mission to catch a basilisk turns into a power struggle as both groups try different strategies to stop it, and while Beas side wins, she still feels like she loses - especially when Oliver pushes Wills buttons after. Now she takes some time off back at home where she thinks she can get some time to clear her head and maybe decide on her future, leave the FREAKS or stay with them. But when a vampire lord tries to convice her to be his consort, she realizes she will need help from all of her friends in order to not only stay single, but also survive a dark secret that could cost her her life.

This book was actually pretty good as is the series, Bea shows that she is more human than some female characters in this genre. Her fears, her dreams, and her desires really show. Also her love life goes from a triangle to a pentagon as an ex boyfriend and new vampire try to vy for her attentions. Sooner or later she will need to make a decision - but for now the drama is far to entertaining to let it up yet. I can not wait for the next in the series

Loved this book and these characters. Ms Harlow does such a wonderful job creating relatable, strong, kick ass female characters! This is yet another wonderful installment about Bea and her misadventures. Can't wait for the next book!

I’m going to start by saying that I highly recommend that you don’t start this series with this book. Not that it’s not good. But more that there is so much alluding to events that happened in the first two books in the series, that you’ll likely feel a step behind if you start here. I suppose I should also warn that I may end up with some spoilers in this review IF you’ve not read the earlier books.

Page one of this book throws Bea in danger facing a mythological creature. Since it’s her story, you know she survives, but things just go downhill for her. She’s caught in between the man… er, werewolf, she’s lusting over but who isn’t talking to her and her vampire best friend. The two men don’t get along and the whole F.R.E.A.K.S. Squad is taking sides. Bea decides she needs to escape and run home to grandma for a Christmas vacation. Too bad the vacation wasn’t all that relaxing.

I’ll admit, I have some mixed feelings on this book. In the end, it was a very enjoyable read and once I got reading it was hard to put it down. But there were just some times that I wanted to throw my ereader across the room when it came to Bea’s emotional roller coaster. While I totally understand the conflict that she was going through, I got tired of reading the same arguments with Will and internalization. In fact, seeing as the “mystery” or “suspense” part of the book didn’t really happen until about two thirds of the way through the book, I think what would have made this better for me would have been less emotional stuff and more mystery.

Bea is back and better than ever in this installment of the series. I love Bea and not just because she is so kick ass but she is also snarky and has amazing powers and did I mention her loyalty to her family and friends. This time around we meet up with Bea who is still dealing with the fall out from the last book and there is a lot of tension within the group so she decides to take a break and go home to visit her grandma for Christmas. Bea quickly learns that her vacation isn't going to be as quiet as she thought it would be. The normal characters are back in this book so we get more of Oliver and Will and all of their hotness. I loved the addition of Bea's best friend in the form of April. She was just such a cool character and so spunky you instantly fall in love with her. I loved the way she would interject her thoughts on why Bea hasn't slept with either of the guys yet. Their friendship was just so cool.

Bea tries to adjust to being home and having a chance to relax and be away from Will and Oliver to process everything but that doesn't last for long. Bea is asked out on a date by her ex boyfriend and she takes pity on him and goes out with him. I felt so sorry for Bea that she thought it made any sense to waste her time with an ex that was one for a reason but in true Bea fashion she becomes involved in a situation. Bea gets tangled up with a new enemy in the form of a hunky vampire who owns the area Bea is in. There is a lot that happens along the way and a surprise that you will not see coming. I don't want to say too much more without spoiling it but I felt so bad for Bea when she found out what was going on and who was responsible.

Overall this was another great installment to this series and I am looking forward to the next one.
