Book Description

Sheriff Bernie Raines finds herself torn between loyalty to a childhood friend and her sworn duty to uphold the law. The year is 1985, but this incident has pulled her thoughts back to a simpler time full of happy chldhood memories and loving family and friends. A piece of those memories is missing, and though she struggles to bring it to the surface, it may be forever lost in the murky shadows of the past. Bernie enlists the help of her friend Sheriff Buck Davis, and the two soon find themselves immersed in a mystery as complicated and unpredictable as the clan of Gypsies that seems to be manipulating their destinies.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sarasota at another time July 26, 2012
Format:Paperback
Ms. Palmer hooked me with a page-turner plot, details of family, and the mildly familiar setting in Sarasota, Florida, but I loved the touches of supernatural voodoo/gypsy fun that made the story even more complicated. Yes, she would benefit from an editor's touch, but I'm still looking forward to her second book. Her long career in the court system has given her lots of material to work with. Keep writing, Sheila Palmer!

5.0 out of 5 stars Life and Death on the Tamiami Trail August 6, 2012

Very interesting. A good read. I enjoy a good mystery and this one kept me in suspense until the very end.
I also enjoyed the journey through old Sarasota from her personal perspective.
I'm anticipating her next one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyed this one, Nice CLEAN Mystery Romance June 23, 2014
By Kris
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Bernie is a Sheriff, and her love interest is also a Sheriff in the next County. Bernie was raised around some
Gypsies when she was around 8 years old. They all live in Florida.

If you love a book that gives you written details of everything around, from the trees and flowers to the buildings, and every single part of the characters, then this is the one for you. This one even has Pictures too.
For me it was a bit too much with the details, and looking back into the past, which is why I took one star off.
But it was a very good story and I did enjoy it allot. Good Romance, good mystery.
Lots and lots of characters. I liked Bernie, and loved Buck.

I DO recommend it, it is short and an easy read with No Detailed Sex or bad language. I don't mind either one myself but I know some readers look for books like this one with no bad words or detailed sex.
And this one had little to No typos too. very nice!

Happy reading Ya'll.........

3.0 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars July 28, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Give this one 3.5 stars. Not bad, not great. I just couldn't get into the characters as much as I would like. The "sheriff" lacked that strong female vibe. You couldn't turn the page without another "mysterious" plot device. And this book has it all: fortune-tellers, Native American shaman, Mafia hit men, Hawaiian princesses... Taken together, it felt unpolished and overcooked.

1.0 out of 5 stars Animal Cruelty Always a Knee Slapper October 8, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The author pads the book with endless descriptions of hand shakes and clothes descriptions. Great details of a gun happy coward shooting a cat JUST HILARIOUS. Also great details of a fool managing to get injured "fighting" a muzzled alligator. Stopped at 44% it would seem starving dogs are another knee slapper. Not a book it is trash.

3.0 out of 5 stars Different story August 11, 2014
By annie m
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This murder mystery was just ok, as the story would have benefitted greatly from a good editor. After the first few chapters I went to the table of contents and then to the order page to find out whether I was reading fiction or non-fiction, since it had real people photographs in it (it's fiction). It also took awhile to figure out how old the h was (I started at 60s, then 40s, but she was 32), and what year the current events were happening in (1983).

The characters frequently didn't use contractions when they spoke, which resulted in stilted conversations, and sometimes they laughed inappropriately, in my opinion. The H/h were not fully developed, leading to unanswered questions about their backgrounds. For example, what happened in the h's previous relationship, that ended in his death? Does she have a drinking problem, or not? What was the deal with H's dad? Those were all brought up in a sentence or two, never to be discussed again. And some events took giant leaps forward, without laying the groundwork to get there, to make them at least somewhat believable.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a bad read.
This book shows a really good potential. Just needs a bit of development on some areas. Almost seemed as if the gypsies were used to plug a hole in the story.

Great read. Was a little confused with the back story on Bernie but it all started to come together nicely. Thank God not a ton of sex scenes.
