Zombies in the valley...,
By
This review is from: Death Valley (Paperback)
It's one thing to plan a rave for your cool high school buddies in an abandoned bomb shelter. It's another thing entirely when a geek interrupts your decorating efforts and bumps the door closed, sealing you and several friends inside.
But what are you going to do when you finally get out and discover the entire San Fernando Valley is populated with zombies? Your family, your friends, your teachers -- everyone who wasn't in the shelter with you is now out to eat your brains. Death Valley is a fun little story of survival that doesn't skimp on the more serious side of the tale. The book is brief, but you feel for these kids and you mourn their losses. Andrew Cosby wrote the story with Johanna Stokes, and Rhoald Marcellus provided good, cartoony art. by Tom Knapp, Rambles.(n e t) editor

If John Hughes had made a zombie movie...,

This review is from: Death Valley (Paperback)
It's a good idea, really. After all, what would happen if a bunch of high school kids, with their naive pretensions of maturity, their obsession with social standing, and their defiant attitudes are suddenly thrust into a situation in which they have no one to rely on but each other? Would they band together and stand tall against the odds, or would they just revert to being whiny teenagers, always looking to knife each other in the back and remind each other who is more important than who? Look back on your own high school days, because the creators of this neat little zombie story clearly looked back on theirs.
Just like any John Hughes movie, or any high school story in general, you can imagine the cast of characters waiting for you in Death Valley. There's the chick with daddy issues, the nerd who knows more than anyone else about what's going on, the skater, the rich pretty boy, the jock bully, the pretty chicks whose job is to basically look pretty...kids who really would have never associated with each other are now forced to either unite or die. No parents, no teachers...in other words, like so many other coming-of-age stories, which is what this is at its heart, it's time to see if these kids are as mature and independent as they think they are. When the dead are coming, it's really time to grow up. The beauty of it is, anyone who went to public education already knows these kids. That means you already know who to root for and who you would want to just die already. It's a good story that really puts these youths against the odds, and inevitably, each other. It's a good story with real characters, set in a world we all instantly recognize. If you have a collection of zombie graphic novels already, or are looking to start one, don't overlook this one.
