Book Description

December 1, 2007
In Book 3 (Eve of War), Torg and Laylah are hounded at every turn by Invictus evil minions. They flee from one danger to the next in a frantic attempt to reach the safety of Jivita. Along the way, they encounter unexpected enemies and friends--and even receive help from an unlikely source: Vedana, the mother of all demons, whose diabolical schemes include keeping the wizard and sorceress alive. At least for now. Despite their perils, Torg and Laylah succumb to the lure of supernatural passion and fall desperately in love. But between them and Jivita lay hundreds of leagues of mountains and forests, within which swarm monsters of every size and description. First they must destroy a horrid creature called the Mahanta pEpa, which means Great Evil in the ancient tongue. Then they must confront an army of druids, which are insect-like giants that inhabit the forest of Dhutanga. Upon their escape from the druids, they journey by canoe down a raging river before finally reaching the White City.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Jim Melvin has been a friend of mine for more than twenty years and, for as long as I've known him, his driving interest has been writing an epic fantasy series, something that might find shelf space alongside J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy. But life kept getting in the way. He was married, raised two wonderful daughters, had a full-time job as an editor at the St. Petersburg Times, and did all the other good stuff that eats up time and interferes with achieving those very personal dreams we all entertain. But that s life, right? Well, a few years ago, Jim decided it was now or never. He retired from the newspaper, took his family and savings, and moved to North Carolina. He put everything else aside to fulfill what he believed to be his destiny and nearly two- thousand pages that became The Death Wizard Chronicles. The first book in the six-book epic fantasy was released in September by Rain Publishing, and a new installment will be delivered to bookstores every thirty days until the entire series is available in February 2008. It's a hell of a story, a hell of a series, and Jim Melvin is a hell of a guy. --Bob Andelman, Mr. Media

About the Author

Jim Melvin, 50, was born in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., but grew up in St. Petersburg, Fla. He received his B.A. in Journalism and English from the University of South Florida. He now lives in South Carolina near the Blue Ridge Mountains, a pleasant setting for writing, to say the least. He is married and has five daughters and one ebony cat. Jim was an award-winning journalist at the St. Petersburg Times for twenty-five years and retired in 2004 to become a full-time novelist. At the Times, he specialized in science, nature, health and fitness, and he wrote about everything from childhood drowning to volcanoes. He also was a designer, editor, and supervisor. Jim is a student of Eastern philosophy and mindfulness meditation, both of which he weaves extensively into his work. Meditation helps to clear his mind for long bouts of writing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Book Three of The Death Wizard Chronicles, May 11, 2009

This review is from: The Death Wizard Chronicles, Book 3, Eve of War (Paperback)
"The Death Wizard Chronicles" by Jim Melvin is a six book epic adult sword and fantasy. Bias alert- I'm a big fan of the series. It's like the Lord of the Rings with a touch of basic Buddhism with the action of Conan the Barbarian. It's Star Wars but in pre-medieval times. Wizards, demons, dragons, fairies, druids, vampires, snow giants, ogres, witches, and several species of humans all live in this vast land with snow capped mountains, an ancient aware forest, wide savannahs and a great desert complete with Gila monsters.

Book 3 ends with Torg entering into meditative death where his mind/karma entered a place he has been more than a thousand times, a place where there was no smelling, tasting or touching; only seeing. He turns into a ball of karmic energy and travels to the future. Just as he reached the deep-blue ball of Death energy and began to absorb the energy he heard something he has never experienced before, barely audible voices. I'll have to wait until Book 4, World on Fire, to find out more.

This is one series where I could take off from work just to read the books, I am such a fan. Even writing this review make me want to re-read and experience it again. For me, it's the same feeling as watching Star Wars movies, you know the good guys are going to win, but which good guys will be left? What's their story, their history? What bad guys are going to get it? Melvin has the same depth of detail as the Lord of the Rings had. Did I say I am a very big fan?
