Editorial Reviews

2009 release, a dark and urgent Rock 'n' Roll vision from the singer/songwriter. With Grammy-winning producer Joe Chiccarelli (The Shins, The White Stripes) at the helm, Cory's songs have transformed into lush and nuanced recordings that never sacrifice his emotional vulnerability or his rich and unique vocal tone. The songs on Death Won't Send A Letter were recorded primarily at Blackbird Studios in Nashville, TN with Chisel's backing vocalist/keyboard player Adriel Harris and Little Jack Lawrence (The Raconteurs, The Dead Weather) on initial tracking. Cory, Adriel and Little Jack were then joined by Jack's longtime collaborator Patrick Keeler (The Raconteurs, The Greenhorns) on drums. With Patrick and Jack's driving rhythm section the albums' sound took on a grittier hue. And in Brendan Benson Cory found a writing and arranging partner that birthed the lead album track, 'Born Again'. Carl Broemel from My Morning Jacket and Blake Mills of Band Of Horses fame also contribute on guitar.

There is something in these songs by Cory Chisel that draws out a rather surprising emotional response from me. I didn't expect to find my musical nirvana when I downloaded this album, but yep, I was entranced. It's always a joy to find something new and exciting in the music kingdom these days. Rolling Stone magazine had some pretty fantastic things to say about this group.

Born Again and Angel of Mine are my favorite tracks, but each and every one is a gem. The songwriting and musicianship are truly impressive. And the man can SING! The lyrics are sophisticated, but keep close to the world Mr. Chisel inhabits. We are lucky to get to visit that world.

His first EP, Cabin Ghosts, isn't quite as polished but is an excellent introduction to the band. I can't wait for more!!

This is a great CD from a young artist and his band. Cory Chisel can write and sing slow, folk-type, songs and those songs which get you up and dancing hard and fast. I have had the great pleasure of seeing CC & the Wandering Sons a couple of times live and look forward to both seeing him again and listening to his new releases. I just hope that, with the economy the way it is, that this young man keeps at his art and delivers to us more music of this sort. He has a distinctive and refreshing sound and, of my about 1,000 CD's, his music (this CD and Cabin Ghosts) gets more than its share of play on my stereo. On this CD, I especially love: Born Again, Calm Down, Angel of Mine, So Wrong For Me and What Do You Need (my favorite and incredible live!). The album has no 'throw away' songs, something I find to be rare. The songs are quite varied; running the gamut from high energy songs to Cory Chisel's slow, beautifully constructed, ballads. My strong suggestion; Buy this CD and Cabin Ghosts.

I'm writing this review actually in advance of purchase (I've listened via streaming thus far). Actually what introduced me to CC and WS is his backup vocalist Adriel Harris. I did a search for her after hearing her on a collaborative album with her husband Noah....a great listen. Usually, I'm a bit biased, preferring male vocalists over female, but she has an AMAZING voice and Cory knows what he's doing incorporating her so regularly in his songs. Although it would appear she doesn't crave the spotlight, in case Cory or Adriel reads this...........Adriel please do a solo album or a few lead vocal tracks on a next album with Cory! Anyways, with that disclaimer out of the way, fantastic album that is dripping with musical excellence!

If a CD is truly amazing then I'm one of those wingnuts that will actually purchase a backup CD just incase something happens to the first purchase. This is one of those CDs! Why on earth this music is not blowing up the airwaves yet is beyond me, but I am truly hooked.
Like another reviewer said before me I don't tend to analyze my choices in music too deeply, I just know what I like. Any song that can grab me and make me feel something works for me, and this ENTIRE CD is full of songs like that. Favorites are "Tennessee", "My Heart Would Be There", and of course "Born Again". I sure hope this group tours the south soon, would love to see them play live!

A friend recently recommended Cory Chisel, and I am so grateful. Cory is a local and amazing talent. His voice phenomenal and his music stirring. If you're looking for something a little different, definitely give this musician a try. Gripping combination of folk & blues is how I would best describe. I don't overly analyze my music, just know what I like--and this is good music.

Great music CD from start to finish. I got this CD from Cory Chisel at a small Irish Pub in Newport RI where his band showed up unexpectedly to play a few songs after performing at the Folk Festival. Up to that point I had never heard of him or his music. Enjoyed listening to them live so much I had to get their CD. 5 stars all the way. Luckily he had some with him for sale.

This album is a must have. Chisel goes away from the sound of his previous effort, Little Bird, in favor of a more electric sound. The opener "Born Again" sounds like mid 80's Springsteen at his finest. The lyrics tell a tale of spiritual re-birth that are evident simply by reading the opening and closing lines. "I've been feeling like my old self again, 'cause mama didn't raise me to be no Christaian..." to the closer "I've been feeling like my old self again, 'cause mama didn't raise me to be no victim."
The tempo slows a bit for the next track "Calm Down" which struck me as an easy going Americana track, a song that wouldn't have been out of place on an early Bonepony album. The tempo doesn't stay slow for long as the opening bass chords of "Longer Time At Sea" sound like the album is taking a turn towards metal before the drums and guitar arrive to lighten the mood of the song that inspired not only the album title but the album artwork as well. This is probably my favorite track on the album.
The next three tracks are all solid mid-tempo rock tracks which Chisel flows through flawlessly. The keyboards shine on the chorus of "Angel of Mine," a solid southern rock guitar riff flows throughout "My Heart Would Be There" and "Curious Thing" sounds like a Dose-era Gov't Mule track with a better vocalist. Track 8 is an updated version of "So Wrong For Me," a haunting ballad about a love that just isn't working no matter how hard the balladeer tries. This song is really the best showcase on the album for the vocals of Keyboardist/vocalist Adriel Denae. She really harmonizes well with Chisel and adds great depth to the vocal sound of this track as well as others on the album.
