Dame Ngaio here exploits her theatrical background to the very best effect to provide us with one of the best, not only of her books, but of all the many murder mysteries with similar backgrounds. Her chief characters are well- rounded, interesting and redolent of grease paint, self-dramatization and the proscenium stage. The puzzle is a good one and Superintendent Alleyn is as suave, persuasive and humane as ever he was. James Saxon superbly performs the piece with rich characterizations and a crystalline English for the English or Americans. This is an audio book superior even to the superior book that it is.
