3.0 out of 5 stars Fun Series, Poor Introduction
Deathlands 1: Pilgrimage to Hell / 0373625014

I'm a fan of the Deathlands series, although I can't quite put my finger on why. They're pretty much gun-'n'-torture fantasies that take place in an apocalyptic America where might makes right and men are real men and women are real women and death is always lying just around the corner. Not the sort of thing I...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Reading, July 18, 2001

One of the better books I have read this year, Pilgrimage to Hell is a great novel for anyone into post-nuclear holocaust fiction. For anyone who has played the PC roleplaying games Fallout and/or Fallout 2, this is basically like 'reading' the game. Great stuff. The ending was a little weak, but made me want to go out and pick up the second book in the series, which is a good thing. I was reading this book whenever I could fit in time after work, I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Grandfather of them all, June 22, 2002
The first in a long line of Deathlands books. You will notice I do not call them novles because while they are enjoyable they hardly qualify as "War and Peace". Here for the first time we meet Ryan Cawdor, basically a one eyed crazy man frontman for a firm(but fair) warlord named "The Trader". We are also introduced to J.B Dix, Kysty, Do , Hun and many others. The author manages to paint a very vivid picture of a world affected by Nuclear War and this book has (by far) the best plot and charecter development of any other in the serise.

Overall-If you liked William W. Johnstone you will like this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gritty, well written, futuristic sci-horror, February 11, 2000

The beginning happens with the end. Instead of starting the novel with the reader scratching his head, the author does the favor of giving a history.

A nuclear war destroys society as we know it. The book picks up with the remnants of civilization, 100 years after the war.

A greedy baron and his henchmen attack the main characters, forever altering the course of their lives. Their adventures take them all over the shattered continent of North America, dealing with mutants and monsters...losing and gaining friends along the way.

The first book was by far the best. The series still kept my attention 15 books later...but now I see that Axler has written a *lot* more material.

A must read...but definitely a "guy" book. (No offense to the TomBoys out there)

4.0 out of 5 stars In the beginning, the world was destroyed., March 21, 1997

This exciting first book in the Deathlands Saga is classic. As I reread the prologue, it is amazing at how the author captured the possibilities of probable futures. The story unfolded, and captured the reader at every turn. If you have read other Deathland books before, you must read this one even if this means going to a used bookstore or asking a friend to borrow it. Ryan Cawdor is riding with the Trader, and, well I won't spoil the rest. It is a must read

4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting start..., November 9, 1998

This review is from: Deathlands: Pilgrimage to Hell (Audio Cassette)
Oddly, this book didn't reall grab me the first time I started to read it, probably because I was engrossed in the David Robbin's "Endworld" series at the time. However, I picked it up again and it struck a chord with me upon reading it in it's entirety. The reader is introduced into the basic world of the series, and its combatants. The pace is quite quick, and the descriptions of the events often allow you to imagine yourself as a distant observer, something I always enjoy. As an introduction to the series, it performs well, and has wet my appetite for the rest of the novels. I have finished 4 of the books to date, and hope that the others in the series (some 43+ and counting) live up to the standards set by this crisp, enthralling introduction to the lives of Ryan and his party.

4.0 out of 5 stars Two things to remember if you're going to begin this series:, September 30, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
First, the plots are pretty much the same. Ryan and company shows up, there is an evil Baron, they usually kill him or her, and they ride off into the sunset. While one would think this would get old after the first 20 or 30 books, that apparently is not the case as they are still going strong. I honestly don't have a clue how many books there are, but I do know there is a number 55 on my shelf. Second, the damn things are additive.

Yes, these truly are manly books for manly men, and even as I write I feel hair sprouting on my chest -- and won't the husband be surprised about that! - but for all their simplicity and sameness of plot, they are entertaining, the good guys (more or less) usually win, and the bad guys (perverts, liars, cheats all) usually die. There are a few exceptions to this but not many.

I don't think I'd give one of these to the kiddies what with the sex, violence, language, etc but for those over 18 why not indulge yourself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Graphic Audio ruined audio books., January 4, 2010
I have to say after listening to Pilgrimage to Hell all other audio books were ruined for me. The voice acting, sound effects and music are great. I have tried to listen to other audio book since and it just isn't the same. Sure Audio Books like World War Z are great. However, for the most part audio books like "Under the Dome" are just too boring after a Graphic Audio presentation. I would highly recommend this series for anyone who makes regular long trips. My wife and I picked it up at a truck stop on a long trip and that was all it took. We now own #1,2,3 and #0 (prequel). These Audio CDs will keep you entertained on long trips, though they are NOT child friendly.
