Editorial Reviews

-CMJ, 2000

It's the band's cracked perspective and skewed non-sequitors that give these songs such an appealing kick.

Product Description

Shortly after selling 3000+ units of their demo EP (after 3 members left CAKE, forming this band) and developing a strong following on the West Coast, the band signed a recording contract with Capricorn Records. They then went on to make this debut album ÓDeathrayÓ with producer Eric Valentine (Third Eye Blind, Smashmouth, Citizen King). This self-titled album was released in the U.S. in May of 2000. The band toured the states extensively in support of the album, which received a great deal of critical acclaim as well as some college and commercial radio play. Due to the collapse of Capricorn records during the release cycle, this album was completely overlooked by the industry for the post-newwave/pop gem that it is. Gary Newman and Rick Ocasek would be proud.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's not CAKE., June 28, 2007
This review is from: Deathray (Audio CD)
I bought this CD with an open mind, looking for something that if not CAKE, was at least as fresh as CAKE.

The CD isn't bad--it's better than average "alternative". But overall, it floats at surface level with a lot of other contemporary "alternative" stuff. Essentially, you'd have a hard time identifying the sound. In contrast, CAKE is absolutely brilliant, a sound so original that it's in the league of the Talking Heads and DEVO.

Please, guys. More CAKE. Less Deathray.

5.0 out of 5 stars The first??, September 4, 2003

This music is more addictive than any opiate - by that third hit you will be willing to sell Amway for another listen. I hate to classify, but think pop with a very indie sound. My only complaint is that this is their only friggin album.
