A Marty Hopkins mystery
Deputy Marty Hopkins is not pleased to be awoken in the middle of the night by a phone call from her boss. As tornado season hits southern Indiana, Marty's small county sheriff's office finds itself with a perplexing puzzle to solve. The body of a young woman has been found in a bank lobby but, suspicious or not, the cause of death is unclear.
In the meantime, Marty's recent application for divorce is not being well received by her husband or her young daughter, and her friend's fifteen-year-old daughter has run away to join a rock band. All of this, combined with the imminent threat of tornadoes, conspires to make a very difficult couple of weeks for Marty . . .

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Nichols County in southern Indiana is usually pretty quiet, but this summer Deputy Sheriff Marty Hopkins has an unusually full plate: a young woman has been found dead in the lobby of the local bank. Marty's instincts tell her it's murder, but when a tornado sweeps through the country, leaving a trail of death and disaster in its wake, even murder goes on the back burner, especially after a young rock star is found dead in the tornado's aftermath. At first it looks like he was killed by the storm, but Marty's not so sure. Could his death be linked to the young woman's? Marty, who has lived in Nichols County all her life and knows just about everybody, is forced to confront the fact that one of her oldest friends may be hiding a decidedly dark side. Although Carlson's book starts off at a laconic pace, the tempo picks up quickly, leading to a genuinely shocking climax. Believable characters and an unusual setting close the deal: this one's a winner. Emily Melton

5.0 out of 5 stars Deathwind, March 6, 2005
This review is from: Deathwind (Library Binding)
Deathwind is a compelling book, with lots of action. Sheriff Marty Hopkins is a sympathetic and strong protagonist, battling family problems as well as criminals. I loved it from start to finish--as I loved P.M. Carlson's first two books in this series, Gravestone and Bloodstream.
