ACTUALLY, A VERY NICE READ,
This review is from: Debbie: My Life (Hardcover)
First, I must state that I am not overly fond of autobiographies in general and celebrity autobiographies in particular. I found this one in a used book store and added it to my stack of finds on pure whim. I am very glad I did. The book was actually quite readable and very enjoyable. I have always enjoyed Ms. Reynolds' work and after reading her story, appreciate it, the work, even more. The books is salted with many fine photographs of the subjects life and work and are well placed. The narrative is easy to follow and as I said, "readable." Quite a fascinating life. All in all, if you are interested in such things, I highly recommend this one

The Most Fascinating Book I've Ever Read!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Debbie: My Life (Paperback)
I was not able to put this book down! It is so wonderfully entertaining, just like Debbie Reynolds herself! "My Life" is full of great Hollywood stories and focuses on one of the most interesting stories I've ever heard--Debbie's life story. It's funny and it brings you right in, as though Debbie is telling you the story, not just writing it. I HIGHLY recommend this stellar book, "Debbie:My Life."

"Great Story On A Great Life",
By Terry Richard "Terry Richard" (Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada) - See all my reviews (TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This review is from: Debbie: My Life (Paperback)
I always thought of Debbie Reynolds as an actress who never received her just rewards. Although known for her movie work, singing, and stage performances, Debbie has never been seen as a huge Hollywood star although she has appeared in some of the most popular movies ever like "Singing In The Rain".
In her autobiography Debbie writes about growing up poor and her desire to be an actress and singer. In her memoirs no stone goes unturned as she writes about her battles with Gene Kelly, her love for people like Judy Garland, and her terrible marriages, especially to Eddie Fisher (the father of Debbie's daughter Carrie of "Star Wars" fame) who left her for Liz Taylor (Debbie and Liz would actually become friends in later years starring in the TV movie "These Old Broads"). Miss Reynolds also discusses in full detail how another husband of hers stole all her money and left her destitute, forcing her to work her butt off to pay back taxes and creditors. Perhaps the best part of the book is when Debbie writes about her close personal relationships with two huge hollywood stars, Joan Crawford and Agnes Moorehead (of "Bewitched"). She writes candidly about Miss Crawford, how lovely and personal Joan was to her at MGM and how they were friends until the day Joan died in 1977 and how Debbie believes Joan died of a suicide. On Miss Moorehead, Debbie discusses how terrible she felt when Agnes died of cancer and how she couldn't believe a young, unscrupulous lawyer took all of Agnes' fortune upon her death. A great read, I enjoyed "Debbie: My Life" tremendously which is a better-than-average Hollywood book.

Debbie Reynold's 1988 autobiography is the exciting, whirlwind story of her showbiz career and rocky personal life including her disastrous financial and husband-picking skills. Raised in poverty, she won a beauty pageant as a teenager; the prize was a screen test and the rest is history. One needn't be a big fan of Debbie's to enjoy the book; it is so well-written and so full of dramatic highs and lows that I think most people would enjoy it.
I felt as though I grew up with Debbie via the pages of "Photoplay" magazine, but her memoir tells the real story behind the red carpets and glossy photos. She pulls no punches concerning her marriages to Eddie Fisher and Harry Karl as she vents her hatred toward them. Her long career as an entertainer is described in detail and her friends were the Who's Who of Hollywood's golden age. This life story is a real page-turner; I couldn't put it down. It would make a terrific movie, but who could ever match Debbie's boundless energy and timeless appeal? Highly recommended.

This is one of the most interesting books I have ever read. Putting it down was very hard, I would read it in bed until my eyes became blurry and I still hated to stop. It filled in a lot of things I didn't know about Debbie. I have always loved Debbie.Singing In The Rain is my favorite movie of all time, I have watched it about 50 times or more. Her story is just amazing, she is such a great survivor. She has a heart of gold and a beautiful person who didn't deserve what she had to endure.Getting so much background on the stars and Hollywood was just wonderful. She has such a great memory for detail. I loved every word of the book, recommend it to everyone who loves the great days of the movie days, when the stars were really stars.

Great book, though it could stand some updating,

This review is from: Debbie: My Life (Hardcover)
Debbie Reynolds' autobiography is now over 20 years old, so there's no reason why Ms. Reynolds couldn't write a new and revised edition - just like Lauren Bacall has with her own autobio. There's certainly room for new commentary on her work in the last two decades and on the comeback her daughter Carrie Fisher has made (I'd love to know what she thinks of Carrie's "Wishful Drinking" book and one-woman tour!)
Notwithstanding the above, this is a highly readable, enjoyable book, presenting Debbie's own take on the tumultuous events surrounding the infamous Elizabeth Taylor/Eddie Fisher scandal - in which she was the proverbial "wronged wife" - in crisp, entertaining, and not in the least self-pitying fashion. One of the parts I found the most interesting was her account of what it was like, juggling going to a regular high school with trying to get her film career underway in the twilight years of the studio system. Highly recommended.
