5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, powerful, should be required reading for all Christians
This book belongs in every church library and as a part of every church book club. The issues raised between being a Christian and being a follower of Christ are powerful. 3.0 out of 5 stars Christians need to be better
I bought this book based on the reviews here at Amazon. I find it hard to believe I am the only reader rating this as 3 stars. Although I agree with the premise of the book, Christians need to go beyond the church and love non believers just as much as believers. The story was flat for me, and kind of sappy. I enjoy Angela Hunt's novels especially "The Elevator"...

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, powerful, should be required reading for all Christians, September 20, 2005
This review is from: The Debt: The Story of a Past Redeemed (Paperback)
This book belongs in every church library and as a part of every church book club. The issues raised between being a Christian and being a follower of Christ are powerful. Hunt does a wonderful job of capturing the quest of perfection that so many Christians are on, only to forget that we are sinners too, and to be surprised by the sin we find in the world. Emma is a true 3-dimensional character who I would love to know in real life, and I will miss her now that the book is done. It's a great inside look at the life of a televangelist and the missteps even they take on the way. But most of all, this is a powerfully moving story of a mother, her son, and what they teach each other about faith and the Lord.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, March 26, 2004

This novel should be required reading for all Christians, especially for people who have been in the faith for many years and may have forgotten that we are called to reach out to those who don't know Christ. Let's not stay insulated in our safe sanctuaries. Let's get out and minister to a hurting culture.

I cannot praise Ms. Hunt's storytelling abilities enough. I've always loved her books, but this one is special. I'll be telling others to read it.

I don't like sappy books, but since this was written by Angela Hunt, I thought I'd give it a whirl. I was not disappointed. Ms. Hunt can write about anything, and I'd read it. She's a wonderful story-teller, and her tales touch the heart without being overly sentimental. One of my favourite authors.

4.0 out of 5 stars It changed my perception on christianity, August 5, 2005
By
This review is from: The Debt: The Story of a Past Redeemed (Paperback)
I have never read a book by angela hunt but I saw it on my mom's shelf and thought "eh this should be a quick easy read that will amuse me at least a little" boy was I wrong

While it is a very easy read, and it is typical christian generic drama, I enjoyed the contrast of the main characters life and her son.

It was that dichotomy of christianity that really got me thinking about my own 17 year walk with the Lord. It's not so much the THOU SHALT NOTS, but what are you really doing for God. Needless to say because of this book me and a few other friends now hold each other accountable to befriend the untouchables, hurt, and slums of life... and all because of this little novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Touching story, July 14, 2005
By
This review is from: The Debt: The Story of a Past Redeemed (Paperback)
The Debt is a beautifully written and captivating book. One of the major themes of the book is the fact that being religious and behaving like Jesus are not always the same things. It's a story about showing kindness and love to all people, regardless of their actions or circumstances. This was the first Angela Hunt book that I have had the pleasure of reading and it won't be the last. The characters are well developed and the plot is thought provoking. This book made me revaluate the kind of Christian that I am and how I can be kinder and more aware of the needs of others.

5.0 out of 5 stars Redemption by boycott or Love, May 27, 2009
This review is from: The Debt: The Story of a Past Redeemed (Paperback)
Emma Rose is married to a powerful televangelist who wields his power to boycott immorality in movies, televisions and books. Abel Howard is sincere and moral, giving his heart to Jesus when he was quite young; Abel has held steadfastly to the idea that "rot" of the world must be fleshed out. By his side, Emma Rose, whose past Abel never wanted to discuss, does all her wifely duties and pastoral duties to her fullest. UNTIL, one day, she receives a note....a mysterious 28 year old man wants to meet her and Emma Rose knows now she is on a collision course with her buried youth. How will this affect Abel's ministry and how will she share all the soridness that was her existance before she met Jesus and Abel?

Angela Hunt writes so honestly about two sides to a subject....about wiping out evil with force or with Love. This book touched me so deeply and I read it in a day and a half. Her prose is crisp, her issues relevant, her presentation, Godly.

This is a beautiful read and if you need to remember why Jesus walked this earth, this book is for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Compelling Story, February 24, 2004
By
Della M. Burgus (Woodward, Iowa United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Debt: The Story of a Past Redeemed (Paperback)
The Debt is the compelling story of forgiveness, redemption and compassion told from the viewpoint of a pastor's wife who lives safely behind the walls of a popular, dynamic church. Her complacency is challenged when she is forced to come to grips with her past and encounters a faith that stretches beyond her well-ordered world. Angela Hunt always creates believable, interesting characters and settings that capture the imagination. The first person narrative of this book draws the reader right into Emma Rose's world and hold's one's attention until the very last page. There are twists and turns and elements of suspense and romance in the story line that make it difficult to put down.
The book has caused me to re-evaluate some of my own attitudes and my approach to the Christian life. An entertaining and life-changing book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply inspiring!!, April 11, 2005
By
This review is from: The Debt: The Story of a Past Redeemed (Paperback)
This is the first book I've read of Angela Hunts..I am sure it won't be my last. I couldn't wait to find time to read it. Just finished it this morning with tears in my eyes.

It really has opened up my eyes as I have wondered what we could be doing to help people, not just people in our circle of friends and family.

Now I need to take this to God in prayer and hope he will reveal what he wants from me. Thank you Angela for opening my eyes to see.
