Sublime simplicity,
By Scriabinmahler (UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Debussy: Piano Works (Audio CD)
Some of the recordings here sound very muffled, particularly in the lower register, and do not do justice to Casadesus' wonderfully subtle playing, and it takes listener's concentration to fully appreciate what is going on the instrument. But once your ears get used to the background hiss, there emerges, like a beautiful landscape in mist, Casadesus' breath taking pianism of sublime simplicity and exquisite tonal colouring. It's a real shame, Sony deleted these CDs alongside the amazing Ravel piano music on 2CD.

The Best, really the Best,
By
This review is from: Debussy: Piano Works (Audio CD)
Debussy played by a real master of French piano music. *warning - it does not contain Claire de Lune, at least the most commonly known piece of that name* It is played with incredible passion. The Engulfed Cathedral is incredible, and the Petite Suite, played with Gaby Casadesus, is worth the price of the entire album (I payed $80 for it when it was out of print). True, I am a Casadesus fan (no better Beethoven or Mozart, and his Brahms 2nd concerto is the best), but his Debussy is a thing of beauty and a joy forever. If you don't enjoy this album, you probably wouldn't like George Szell's Beethoven and Schubert, either!
