Lovely and relaxing, July 4, 2006
This review is from: Debussy - Prelude a l'Apres-Midi d'une Faune / Trois Nocturnes / La Mer - A Naxos Musical Journey (DVD)
No, this is not a concert video, nor is it billed as one. To complain that it is not something it wasn't intended to be is silly.
How well the images fit the music is a subjective judgement call. I find the images quite effective for the most part (and far from the "amateur" quality claimed by another reviewer).
It is very relaxing and soothing to lie back and gaze at the images as the music washes over you. Debussy's music is particularly well suited to this approach. You don't watch it so much as quietly absorb it. It is an excellent tonic for jangled nerves at the end of a long hard day.
Do yourself a favor and ignore the absurd comments from reviewers who obviously don't understand what this type of DVD is about.

Disappointing, July 31, 2002

Conceptually interesting, but poorly executed. The video scenes are amateurish and poorly aligned with the musical selections. You're just as well off spinning your favorite CD while watching the video feed from the Travel channel on cable. Better, perhaps.

Be warned, this is not a live recording, February 14, 2006
This review is from: Debussy - Prelude a l'Apres-Midi d'une Faune / Trois Nocturnes / La Mer - A Naxos Musical Journey (DVD)
BE WARNED! If you think this is a video recording of an orchestral performance, you will be sorely disappointed, as I was. It is merely a SOUNDTRACK of Debussy with pretty travelogue visuals glued on. There are NO VISUALS OF THE ORCHESTRA AT ALL, no shots of musicianly craftsmanship, faces concentrating, skilled fingers plucking, lips on the oboe, etc. -- nothing of that. It is merely a travelogue plus audio CD. You may as well play the CD in your car, while driving through your own visuals. For me this Naxos purchase was a total waste.
