3.0 out of 5 stars Sports Island, January 26, 2011
By
= Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Deca Sports (Video Game)
My version of this game came as "Sports Island" and after doing a little checking, that seems to be the title of the same game here (Deca Sports) in region 2/4 (UK/Australia).

Sports Island allows you to compete in various sporting events. You can either select a game individuality, or you can compete in tournaments and leagues. Each is an option to select for game play, as well as the options where you can do the usual sound and audio adjustments, but you can also customize the teams and call them what you want, as well as customize the members of the team in a way much like the Nintendo Wii Mii creations (just a watered down version).

I will go through each events to give you an idea of how it works.

"Sepak Takraw" is basically volleyball, but you are kicking the ball instead of with the hands. This game is not much fun to play as all you need to do is push the B button when the ball comes near you, there is also a way to power hit it, once you work out how to do that, it's a breeze, but not much fun at all to play.. it should have used the stylus to make it more interesting then just press a button at the right time.

"Arm Wrestling" this event is pretty boring, to use strength you need to slide the stylus left to right as fast as you can, then tap something at a certain point... this one should have just used the buttons to tap as fast as you can, or even tap the screen or something... but the method used here is not very well though out.

"Wall Climbing" you have to tap an area of the screen at the right time, and do it as fast as you can to get to the top without slipping off. I found this event to just be annoying, as it sounds simple enough, but the computer just blows by you most of the time.

"Clay Shooting" I got used to the way you use this, but I still say it's a dumb idea... you tap the screen to call for a clay pigeon (discus) to be thrown in the air, you then use the stylus to move the target to aim at the object... but then you have to slide the stylus forward to shoot, it can throw your aim off sometimes, but you can get used to it with a few attempts, but it really doesn't work all that great on the stylus.

"Cheerleading" this is the worst event of the whole game, and why it was included is anyone's guess. It's like a really bad watered down version of those dancing games, you have to slide the stylus in the direction it tells you, in a certain position.. I really hated this event and I can't believe it's been included in this game.

"Sky Diving" puts you in a the free fall where the other members of your group form a pattern in the air, and a spot appears where you have to get your player to move into it, you also may have to rotate the player around... it's basically a move the object into the shape game. It's annoying that you can not spin your player around before you are in the position to be in.

"Ping Pong" pretty standard tennis game. Stylus is dragged up to serve, slide it left to right or whatever to swing at the right time... pretty easy, but not very entertaining.

"Bobsled" at first you press the corresponding buttons to have two of your guys push the sled to start, then once in, use the L & R buttons of the DS to lean left or right, and try not to hit the walls... not much fun to be had here at all.

"Rugby" (possibly Gridiron or Football in US version) Birdseye view of the field, someone kicks the ball to the other team (single button does this) then you have to use the arrows of the DS pad to run in a direction, the buttons depending on if you have the ball or not will tackle, kick, kick the ball away and one MIGHT change player or something. I found this to be too easy as all you need to do is kick the ball towards your goals, tackle the computer in front of them, then run for the 5 point try, then you just hit the button to kick when a moving arrow shows you what angle you will be kicking... very simple, but one of the better of all the games on here.

"Golf" It's probably not the best golf game on DS, but I did not mind this game. You drag the stylus down the screen in a certain area (middle) and your golfer will pull back the club, then drag it up as fast as you can to whack the ball. As you get closer, the clubs can be changed, but it will do an auto select of which club to use, then when you get on the green, put away the same way as before.

Overall; I found maybe 3 games to be decent out of all the games on here. Some are really no fun what-so-ever, and some could have been decent had the controls been better. It's a weird mixture of games, ranging from winter events, indoor events, outdoor events and ... cheerleading :S ???? But overall the overall result is it's not a great game. It can pass time if you are bored, but you will get pretty bored of this game within a day or two, a week at the most. There is nothing much to achieve, your only goal is to pass a tournament consisting of ALL events, which just gives you a trophy and you unlock a harder difficulty level to do it all over again and again and again... zzzzzzzzzz

Too much repetitiveness; too much boredom or annoyance; controls could be a heck of a lot better; events need serious consideration as to why they are in this game; overall, don't waste your money. Rent it if you can, d/l if your curious, but I wouldn't want to pay more then a dollar for this, as it will collect a lot of dust and be forgotten about within a week.
