Spectacular, November 15, 1997
This review is from: A Decade of Champions (Hardcover)
Just the sound of their names, makes your hair stand on end, and your heart beat faster. Bold Ruler, the sire of so many greats. Secretariat, can anyone ever forget his thirty one length win in the Belmont, making him the first Triple Crown winner in 25 years. Ruffian, the magnificent filly who came to grief in the fateful match race against Foolish Pleasure . The names go on Alleged, Spectacular Bid, Every page has a story to tell of these champions of the track This is the book of all books for the thoroughbred lover. None can compare. The text is beautifully written, making you feel you know each animal, and all their quirks. The paintings by Reeves are magnificent, you feel you could reach out and stroke a velvet nose, or caress a silky ear. I purchsed my copy in 1980 and along side my 1976 copy of Classic Lines these books are my pride and joy. If you love thoroughbreds, this book is a must, you will thrill every time you read it.

What a blast., January 16, 2010
This review is from: A Decade of Champions (Hardcover)
Patrick Robinson, A Decade of Champions: The Greatest Years of Thoroughbred Racing, 1970-1980 (Fine Arts Enterprises, 1980) There's really not much you can say about a book like this; if it's something you want, you most likely already know about it. Artist Richard Stone Reeves, one of the kings of equine artwork, and turf writer Patrick Robinson team up for a look at a few dozen of the finest thoroughbreds of the seventies. American readers will recognize many of them (probably more than they would have thirty years ago; horses like Mill Reef and Shirley Heights have only gained fame in America once they went to the stallion barn), but by no means all, which makes this worth checking out for budding turf historians. Let's face it, though, the reason you buy a book like this is for the paintings of Richard Stone Reeves, and they do not disappoint. If the book has a problem, it's the binding, which hasn't aged all that well. Granted, if you buy it now, you're probably not going to get one that was actually printed in 1980, but if you're shopping the used market, it's something to keep in mind. Treat this with kid gloves if you get a first edition so nothing falls out and you'll be fine. *** ½

A Decade of Champions, November 17, 2009
This review is from: A Decade of Champions (Hardcover)
This is a great book, profusely illustrated with wonderful artwork and down-to-earth, enjoyable narratives on the horses portrayed. The seller did a good job of describing the condition of the book, which was satisfactory to me. However, I was very dismayed at the length of time the book took to reach me - over 6 weeks from the date of my order. Even allowing for the glitch in the shipping process explained to me by the seller, in response to my enquiry as to the whereabouts of my order, this was very poor customer service.
