Book Description

August 1990
In 1957 Adrian Cowell met the Villas Boas brothers, who worked on behalf of Amazon Indian tribes as yet uncontaminated by outside contact, & accompanied them deep into the rain forest of Brazil. He filmed two documentary series on them for the BBC. In 1980 he began a decade-long project to film the destruction of the people, environment, & resources then being sanctioned in Amazonia by the Brazilian government & underwritten by the West. This book is the textual accompaniment to those films. It stands on its own as a dramatic record of violence, duplicity, waste, & loss, but it also bears witness to the courage of ordinary men & women. Photos.

From Library Journal

The Amazon rain forest has already been the subject of Alex Shoumatoff's The World Is Burning ( LJ 8/90) and Andrew C. Revkin's The Burning Season ( LJ 6/1/90). British author/filmmaker Cowell has been visiting the Amazon for over 30 years and recording its destruction on film since 1980. This book is intended as a companion to the author's TV documentary of the same name, to be broadcast this fall by PBS. Cowell's book is similar to the previous books, yet it also stands out on its own merits as a testimony of the greed, cruelty, and villainy, as well as the courage and vision, that surround the fight for the rain forest. Of the three titles, this may be most in demand because of the TV tie-in.-- Ian Wallace, Agriculture Canada Lib., St.
