A Reason for Attention, December 17, 2010
This review is from: Decade of Excellence (Audio CD)
Nicholas McGegan has been quoted a saying 'great music that enriches lives, inspires passion for period instrument performance, connects audiences to history, preserves tradition and celebrates creative genius' and in reference to his widely traveled experiences with many orchestras he comments 'I'm not working with them. I'm having fun with them.' Both of these statements become highly credible with the release of this recording of excerpts and samplings of some of his finest work. From choral tunes by William Billings, works by Nicola Metteis (1670-1698), arias form Handel operas (including those sung by the inimitable Lorraine Hunt Lieberson), Bach, Purcell, Pelham Humfrey (1647 - 1674), William Walton, Schubert, Johann Kuhnau (1660 - 1722), Johannes Cornago (1400 - 1475), Heinrich Isaac (1450-1517), and Prokofiev!
McGegan snaps and crackles through these pieces with authority and with celebration. Each work i new and alive with his conducting and for a sampler of just what this creative artist has been doing, this DECADE OF EXCELLENCE is as fine a sampler as you'll find. Grady harp, December 10
