Book Description

September 30, 2004
This exciting new book, the result of five years of research and writing, is the first-ever in-depth study of the leading vessel in the European glassmakers repertoire between 1650 and 1950. In presenting the subject on a wide stage, The Decanter provides the reader with a history of European and American glassmaking from a decanter perspective. Illustrated by photographs, patterns and drawings of thousands of examples drawn from numerous public and private collections, the text encompasses the stylistic and technical evolution of fine glassmaking and its influences and social uses. Drawing from hundreds of documentary sources and benefiting from the knowledge and experience of scores of experts in Britain, Europe and the United States, The Decanter is the most comprehensive and current history of fine glassmaking ever published. It provides a glossary of the names of all familiar shapes for the first time and dispels the innumerable myths surrounding the subject. Written by a former journal

1.0 out of 5 stars Extremely disappointed, May 15, 2010

This review is from: Decanter (Hardcover)
At the time of this review a used copy is going for $400. There is a lot of detailed history in this book. Beyond that, I expected a ton of color photos and a broad range of styles. Instead, there are a lot of black and white photos of clear glass designs. From time to time a few pages show color photos of nice decanters. But what really gets me salivating are gilded, colored, painted, enameled, and jeweled decanters. If you want photos of that, you need to look at "Moser Glass- The Klabin Collection" or "Enamels of the World- The Khalili Collection". For inexpensive books that have photos of several of the styles shown in this book and some I think are better, look at "Miller's Collecting Glass- The Facts at Your Fingertips" and "Starting to Collect Antique Glass".

This review is from: Decanter (Hardcover)
Andy 'the Decanter Man' has really done us proud in this epic production that has answers to most questions about the decanter. It is an excellent read not only for the expert and professional antique collector, but a great book for everyone's coffee table. This tome is well researched, illustrated and written. I look forward to future publications by this author.
