Product Description

24 July 2011 marks what would have been the 90th birthday of Giuseppe di Stefano (died March 3, 2008).

Di Stefano's long career began with his operatic debut in 1946 at Reggio Emilia when he sang Des Grieux in Massenet's Manon; his last operatic role was as the Emperor in Turandot in July 1992.

Di Stefano is best remembered for his musical partnership with Maria Callas and many recordings; it was Di Stefano who partnered Callas on her last concert tour in 1973/74.

This set brings together Di Stefano's three recital records and L'elisir d'amore recorded for Decca between 1955-64; his other recordings for Decca include Tosca [with Leontyne Price / Karajan], La Gioconda [Milanov] and La forza del destino - originally released on RCA

This compilation brings together most of the recordings made by Giuseppe Di Stefano for Decca/London records. The L'elisir D'amore is a classic recording, and it is good to have Di Stefano in peak form in stereo. Likewise, the sicilian songs are beautifully done, no less so than Di Stefano's first recordings of them on RCA in the late 1940's. The other Italian songs are more problematic, as Di Stefano struggled with the deterioration of his voice in the early 1960s. There are a few gems there as well, such as the Cor'Ngrato, with the second iteration of the refrain done in his plaintive head voice. I do wish that Decca would have stretched the point and included the RCA recordings made by Decca-La Gioconda, La Forza del Destino, and Tosca. Finally, Di Stefano recorded most of the part of Faust in Boito's Mefistofele in the late 1950s for Decca. Following a disagreement with the conductor, Serafin, he walked away from the project and was replaced by Mario Del Monaco. In the late 1970s Decca released a highlights album from the opera with the remains of what Di Stefano recorded of the role. If Decca had included these excerpts in the current collection it would have sold more copies.

I'm so happy to have this collection! I had been looking for separately for one of the albums included here that I used to have in vinyl and had loved for a long time. Mr Di Stefano's voice was wonderful here!

Guiseppe di Stefano is best known for his collaborations with Maria Callas. His full, open throated style of singing was a thrilling pairing to the voice of this great diva, particularly in the 5 years to 1955. I purchased this recording mainly for the performances of the Neapolitan songs as I have a number of recordings of di Stefano in complete operas. I expected to find di Stefano the near ideal interpreter of these beautiful songs. However, I found the voice in all but the very early recordings to be rather tonally dry and pushed too hard, and the orchestral accompaniment over produced, where simpler backing with fewer instruments would have been much better. They are not performances to which I will return in the near future. For a better interpretation of these songs the recording by Carlo Bergonzi is my favorite (Ensayo ENY.CD3416), ahead of the good, and certainly more famous recordings, by Beniamino Gigli. Bergonzi has a wonderful sensitivity in the interpretation of these songs and his backing is to my ear, just right. Listen to his interpretation of "Pecche - Pecche" and you will see what I mean. You won't be disappointed. For a real blast, listen to Franco Correlli's performance of Core ' ngrato taken from an encore to a live performance of Tosca in Parma in 1961. You can hear this performance on YouTube. I have never heard an audience reaction like it and Corelli's response to his audience in the way he sings this song attests to the view that he was an artist whose studio recordings do not serve him well.
