Editorial Reviews

Review

Sarah Woods is fast becoming a favourite of mine. With her marriage disintegrating and her business becoming tiresome, Sarah teams up with Carter, a mysterious private investigator, and begins to learn the ropes.

I will not repeat the synopsis, choosing instead to say that this well-written, funny and intricately-plotted novel is excellent reading. The characters are likeable and effortlessly crafted, inviting me to care what happens to them and cheer for a successful outcome.

I am anxious to get to the next Sarah Woods adventure, and see whether she can weave her way out of her tangled life and solve a mystery as she goes.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Act of Deceit by Jennifer L. Jennings June 12, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is the second in the Sarah Woods Mystery Series by Jennifer L. Jennings, and I found it just as appealing as the first, "An Act of Murder." Sarah still has her massage business, but the number of clients is down a bit, so when approached by a Private Investigator from Boston named Carter, Sarah takes on the job of finding out about the alleged adulterous affairs of a man named Marty who owns a nice restaurant and who has a suspicious wife. Before Sarah can really begin her investigation along with Carter, Marty is killed when he is hit by a delivery van, and the question is whether it is an accidental death or homicide.

As is usually the case, Sarah's husband is away on business three out of four weeks, and her son is seldom home after school. Sarah is alone at home in the evenings and she is tiring, both physically and mentally, of her massage job. Sarah finds the investigating job more challenging and exciting, especially when handsome Max shows up again. It's just what she needs to put a few sparks back in her life and lots of excitement, sometimes more than she can handle and more than Carter wants her to do.

Sarah Woods is fast becoming one of my favorite female sleuths. She's funny, down to earth, and isn't afraid to try something new. She might be afraid of going into a potentially dangerous situation, but she does it anyway to get the job done. And it's a good thing that Carter watches over her before she becomes too wreckless. This is a fast-paced mystery that is more the length of a novella. It kept my interest from the very beginning and I'm looking forward to the next installment in this series.

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Act of Deceit April 17, 2012
By Kaye
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is the second novella by this author with Sarah Woods as the heroine and I very much enjoyed it. My only complaint is that I want more. I want to know more about what happens with Sarah, Massage therapist & part-time Private eye. I want to know if she will give up on her 'less than fulfilling' marriage and give in to her desires for the much younger Max.

In this episode Sarah almost gets killed while working to solve the question whether or not a 'ladies man' was accidentally killed in a traffic accident or if it was something more sinister.

I look forward to finding out what Sarah will get up to next. I highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars great murder mystery August 22, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Sarah now has it in her blood. She is trying her hat at PI work with Carter. Carter a PI she works and meets in the 1st novella. The story opens with Sarah at a popular bar and a good looking man approaches her. Buys her a drink. Then offers to "walk her to her room". So they get into the room and he starts to take off his clothes when Marty's (the guy with Sarah) wife comes out and confronts Marty. They are blowing up at each other and Sarah lets herself out. Her and Carter are talking about it afterwards and you find out the wife had hired them to prove her husband has been cheating. So Sarah goes back to her life. She is bored and is just on pins and needles for her next PI job. Her new secretary at the massage clinic is a man named Sam. A good friend of the family who thinks she is not taken care of by her husband Daniel. When Max shows up again her heart begins to pound but she also doesn't want to lead him on. All is back to the same old life until, she reads the paper and finds out Marty has been killed. She immediately calls Carter and they meet for coffee. Then they are approached by Marty's wife. She says they were reconciling and knows it was not a accident that the police think. She knows that he was murdered. Both Carter and Sarah doubt that it is true. But when she offers 3 grand to take the case, it makes them reconsider. So the investigation begins. Did Marty's womanizing ways make someone want to murder him? Or is there something else more to the story than what they could even imagine?

Jennifer Jennings did it again. Kept me glued to my kindle for the entire book. She may be converting me to mysteries. Sarah is a woman people can relate too. Someone looking for more in life and finds Carter's PI business.

4.0 out of 5 stars Where to go from here January 10, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The saga of Sarah Woods continues. Sarah is still trying to come to terms with changes in her personal life. She is looking at becoming an empty-nest mom and being in an unsatisfying relationship with her husband. She is looking for change and challenge.

What better challenge than to become a private eye. And, who better to learn from than Carter. The case begins with infidelity and ends with murder. Sarah is funny, likeable and irrepressible and best of all I like her.

Follow the clues with Sarah and see if you can guess the murderer.

5.0 out of 5 stars An apprentice detective at work September 3, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a well-written, fast-paced murder mystery about an apprentice detective helping solve a murder mystery despite an unsettled personal life. The protagonist is Sarah Woods, a 42 year old wife with a teenage son and a successful career. Her marriage is strained and she is attracted to another man, bored with work, and her son is growing up. Something drives Sarah to seek excitement--personal awakening, midlife crisis, maturity, a simple desire for change, whatever. Thus, she helps a professional private investigator named Carter with various small jobs that lead up to solving the murder in this book.

A philandering husband named Marty dies when hit by a truck in a crosswalk and police write off the incident as an accident. Despite the victim's errant ways, his widow suspects foul play and hires Carter to investigate. Carter enlists Sarah to help, instructing her in the detection business along the way. Sarah interviews friends and possible murder suspects, sometimes posing as a journalist. The list includes the accident driver, a restaurant manager, an old friend, an attorney, one of the victim's former lovers, her father, and his close friend. In the course of the investigation, she is exiled from a bar, her car is stolen, and an attempt is made on her life. I could go on, but, the point is, she takes an interesting walk on the wild side (without informing husband or son what she is up to).

Though inexperienced, Sarah is smart, courageous, cunning, and proves quite capable as a fledgling detective. As this book ends, her alienated husband has arranged a vacation trip for them together to Hawaii.
