Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Thomas Santucci heads the investigation into the decapitation murder of a "psychic adviser" in Pittsburgh. Because his ambitious, crass, and insensitive boss faces reelection soon, the pressure is on to solve the case. Santucci seeks help from friend Grant Montgomery, a retired "mentalist," and the two soon find evidence of fraud: the victim "advised" a wealthy woman to donate big bucks to a shady paranormal institute. The basic premise of this first novel works fine, but Aiello wields a heavy hand, throws in unnecessary filler, and waffles with unwarranted explanation. An unnecessary purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars The New Detective Hero: Power of the Mind, March 6, 2000
By
Steve Alber (Pittsburgh, PA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Deceivers (Paperback)
In a detective book that begins with a grisly murder, you'd expect blood and guts and gore galore ... but from the pen of Robert Aiello, you better get use to the unexpected. Aiello brings us a new detective hero: Grant Montgomery, imagination whose talent for cracking a murder mystery lies not with his brawn, but with his brain.

Aiello's first foray into the world of suspense fiction centers on the unusual background of an equally unusual protagonist. His hero, Grant Montgomery, isn't a retired army officer, CIA agent or hard-boiled private eye. Instead, he is a retired mentalist who knows that mentalism is phoney, and knows further how to use his own expertise to expose a fraud. When a well-known paranormal winds up dead in the middle of Pittsburgh's Point State Park with a cryptic note attached to his corpse, the Pittsburgh police call in Montgomery to tap his background in an effort to solve the case.

The result is a fast-paced, exciting read that wanders through a labyrinth of puzzles, false leads and dead ends to an unpredictable and surprizing conclusion that will leave you with a faint grin and an "Aha!" Along the way, there are a series of new twists among the characters that haunt the pages of our mystery novels: the honest cop, the ego-manical politician, the gullible dowager; and oh yes, Grant Montgomery's love interest, the dowager's leggy, attractive (and conveniently unattached) daughter. The result of their interactions and Montgomery's expertise is an irresistable tale of deceit, intrigue and good old-fashioned detective work.

If you love the mystery genre - and you're looking for a new and different kind of hero and a new and different kind of story - pick up "The Deceivers," and get set for a crackerjack of a ride.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Novel Moves Faster Than the Speed of Thought", November 20, 1999
This review is from: The Deceivers (Paperback)
"In . . . this fast-paced suspense novel - the author's debut as a fiction writer - Aiello aims to get the reader's heart racing. . . Aiello's succinct, page-turner style features cliff-hangar chapter conclusions. . . Grant Montgomery is destined for a long shelf-life. . . Aiello wields words with power, and the descriptive narrative surrounding murders is unsettling." Courtest of The Tribune-Review of Greensburg and Pittsburgh, PA.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Compelling Read, October 18, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Deceivers (Paperback)
I am the author of The Deceivers and I hope that you will enjoy reading my novel as much as I enjoyed writing it. My protagonist is Grant Montgomery, a retired mentalist only in his mid-forties. Grant tries to help a friend on the Pittsburgh, PA police force solve themurder of a psychic scam artist. But the case resurrects Grant's old demons, forcing him to face a haunting tragedy from his past. When Montgomery uncovers a nationwide web of deceit and murder, he must match wits with a ruthless public official and an unknowndeadly enemy. One of my objectives is to haveeach novel in my series reveal one or moremethods used by phony psychics, and my firstnovel reveals more than one. But my primepurpose is to write entertaining suspensestories that, hopefully, will attract andbuild an audience. After you have read TheDeceivers, please let me have your comments. I'd be happy to hear from you. My e-mail address is Bob@RobertAiello.com.
