Editorial Reviews

Product Description

2010 release, the second album by this renowned California-based vocal ensemble. December Songs is that rare animal: a Holiday-themed collection that you can play any time of year. Appealing to all ages, their arrangements and vocals are as influenced by Imogen Heap and Bon Iver as they are a contemporary Swingle Singers or Bobby McFerrin. The young sextet reinvent classics like "O Holy Night, " "All On A Christmas Morning" and "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing" with a sensibility that makes the songs feel ancient yet entirely modern. They create a song such as "Janette, Isabella" out of a little-known 16th century French carol, or make a breathtaking start to the disc with an "Ave Maria" that is both exquisite choral music and gorgeous pop with an emotional core.

Review

These graduates from the US college a cappella scene are giving the vocals-only pop ensemble a contemporary makeover. Prepare to be stunned by these white winter hymnals." --Paul Lester, The Guardian UK

Inventive, joyful a cappella that reaffirms the power of the human voice --Chris Douridas, KCRW-FM

A gorgeous record, any month of the year --Craig Armstrong

This is an a capella group that really surprises.

If you haven't checked out SONOS' debut album, SONOS Sings, you should-- and you should buy this one, too.

This album is a real gift from Sonos which contains a glimpse of the many great original works we can expect to come from this group in the future. It's a wonderful blend of holiday music ranging from 17th century carols, through more traditional Christmas offerings, and into captivating original pieces that truly reflect the broad range of experiences different people feel at this time of the year. The six voices are as usual, spectacular.

The traditional carols are wonderfully arranged with the rich six part vocal harmonies that fans have come to recognize as the signature of this group. Rachel Bearer's original "Ave Maria" is a glorious ringing reflection of hope that lifts the spirit of the season. There is the thoughtful yearning for the season to be extended indefinitely in Ben McLain's "Home" (twelve days is not enough!) There is the aspect of anticipation found in Jessica Freedman's "Come December" that addresses Advent. In Bearer's second original, the haunting "For Samuel" the group shows depth when touching upon some of the unexpected feelings of strife that can occur at times when families gather during the holidays. Sonos then brilliantly balances that with a "kick up your heals" version of "I Saw Three Ships" which will be a favorite with some of their youngest fans -- I can see little ones dancing and hear them singing along to this piece while decorating the tree. Engineering and production on this album continue to show Chris Harrison's talent extends well beyond his voice.

One of the biggest treats with this album is the fact that much of it can be listened to throughout the year, while the balance fulfills the need for tradition - a real bonus for those fans who receive it as a gift.

The unique and thrilling sound of this all-vocal group has been a favorite of mine for a while. But with this new album, covering some of the less trammeled and loveliest Christmas ballads as well as a few fantastic original tracks by several of the band members, Sonos have hit a whole new plateau. The vocals are, as always, lush and intricate, but the arrangements are ever more confident and original - and the new songs are as memorable as the classics. This is a must-have holiday soundtrack and deserves to be for a long time to come.

If you haven't checked out SONOS' debut album, SONOS Sings, you should-- and you should buy this one, too. The musicians of SONOS are brilliantly talented, but their musicianship really comes through in this new album, with unusual winter and holiday song choices and crystal-clear sound. Just gorgeous!

Sonos' "December Songs" is well sung and brilliantly engineered. As we were listening to it this morning, I was thinking that people really need to hear and buy this so that this group of musicians can be supported.

Please do not mistake this "Sonos" group for the "Sonos" handbell group (another great group of musicians, but a totally different concept).
