Decent Fantasy and Sci-Fi reads

A Listmania! list by S. E. LaPan "darling_seadance" (Arizona)
(REAL NAME)
The list author says: "I've got two other lists up along the lines of 'the Best Fantasy/Sci-Fi' and 'the Worst Fantasy/Sci-Fi.' But I felt like I was missing some books in there. So this list is for the books that were just... good. Entertaining, decent reads, sometimes even great reads. They just weren't good enough to qualify as the best. If you're looking for something to read while you're waiting for something else to come out, maybe you'll find it here.
Thanks for reading! Please see my other lists if you enjoy this one. If you have a question, comment, or recommendation, please email me. My email's on my profile page."
Melusine
1.  Melusine by Sarah Monette
The list author says:
"This book is a bit of a nightmare, and struck me as borrowing a bit too much from Lynn Flewelling's Nightrunner series, but I enjoyed it a lot. Very entertaining, and I loved the characters. The other three books following it were very disappointing, though."

Giants of the Frost
2.  Giants of the Frost by Kim Wilkins
The list author says:
"I really enjoy this author- she writes very readable books. She has her ups and downs, though. The Autumn Castle was fantastic, while this and The Veil of Gold were just good."

Veil of Gold, The
3.  Veil of Gold, The by Kim Wilkins

One Kingdom (Swans War 1)
4.  One Kingdom (Swans War 1) by Sean Russell
The list author says:
"This trilogy starts off slow, and despite an excellent story line and well thought-out characters, it remains kind of slow throughout. An interesting read, just a bit dull at times."

Lord of Snow and Shadows: Book One of The Tears of Artamon
5.  Lord of Snow and Shadows: Book One of The Tears of Artamon by Sarah Ash
The list author says:
"I loooooved this book.  Fan-freaking-tastic. However, it doesn't really stand alone, and all I remember of the second book in the trilogy is that it was torturous. And I didn't make it all the way through the third. But it's worth trying."

The Bone Doll's Twin (Tamir Trilogy, Book 1)
6.  The Bone Doll's Twin (Tamir Trilogy, Book 1) by Lynn Flewelling
The list author says:
"I truly love this author. However, although this trilogy seems like it should be more serious, and darker, than her Nightrunner series, I found it to be a little childish, and also a little boring. It was a struggle staying absorbed through three books."
$7.19   Used & New from: $0.01

Wicked Gentlemen (Hells Below)
7.  Wicked Gentlemen (Hells Below) by Ginn Hale
The list author says:
"I enjoyed this book a lot. It starts off slow but ends up being quirky, dark, entertaining, and cute, which makes for an interesting combination. It's not great, the writing's choppy, but it makes for a good read."
$11.66   Used & New from: $5.77
4.3 out of 5 stars  See all reviews (74 customer reviews)

The Name of the Wind (Kingkiller Chronicles, Day 1)
8.  The Name of the Wind (Kingkiller Chronicles, Day 1) by Patrick Rothfuss
The list author says:
"Entertaining, decently written, way over-hyped. This is good but not nearly as good as everyone seems to think. The main character is a bit of a god character- even when he's wrong, he's right. And the writing is obviously inidicitive of a first-time novelist."

The Wise Man's Fear (Kingkiller Chronicles, Day 2)
9.  The Wise Man's Fear (Kingkiller Chronicles, Day 2) by Patrick Rothfuss
The list author says:
"Including this here because I kinda dis the first book. And it needs that dissing. This book, the second book, though, is truly fantastic. One of the best fantasy novels I've ever read. It has almost none of the flaws the first book has. Don't skip it."
$17.90   Used & New from: $6.98

Shadow Magic
10.  Shadow Magic by Jaida Jones
The list author says:
"The first book by these authors is one of my new favorites. I really enjoyed this one, too, but I'm putting it in this list because it just wasn't as good. And, contrary to reviews, I enjoyed the one after, Dragonsoul, more than this, too."

Ship of Magic (Liveship Traders)
11.  Ship of Magic (Liveship Traders) by Robin Hobb
The list author says:
"This series starts off just as fantastically as all of Robin Hobb's books. She's one of the most creative authors out there. However, this trilogy should have only been two books. I found myself wishing for resolution and end."

Shaman's Crossing: Book One of The Soldier Son Trilogy
12.  Shaman's Crossing: Book One of The Soldier Son Trilogy by Robin Hobb
The list author says:
"What a freaking nightmare. Put this trilogy down several times, and eventually ended up not finishing it. However, creatively, it's genious, as are all Ms. Hobb's stories."

The Belgariad, Vol. 1 (Books 1-3): Pawn of Prophecy, Queen of Sorcery, Magician's Gambit
13.  The Belgariad, Vol. 1 (Books 1-3): Pawn of Prophecy, Queen of Sorcery, Magician's Gambit by David Eddings
The list author says:
"I really enjoyed the Belgariad, (the first 3 books in a 5 book series). They're decently written, humourous, and fun. I got really bored with the 4th and 5th books, though. Seems like the author tried to stretch the story, and instead lost the thread."

A Shadow in Summer (The Long Price Quartet)
14.  A Shadow in Summer (The Long Price Quartet) by Daniel Abraham
The list author says:
"This author really took me by surprise with a fantastic story. I think all the posing may turn people away from this book, but if you treat it as a kind of sign language, it fades into the background, letting great characters and writing come through. In the first 50 or so pages, there's a disturbing scene, but keep reading. You'll understand why it's there."

A Betrayal in Winter (Long Price Quartet)
15.  A Betrayal in Winter (Long Price Quartet) by Daniel Abraham
The list author says:
"A lot of reviewers didn't like this book as much as the first, but I really enjoyed it. I include it in this list because the third book in the series was dull and I never made it to the end, never mind into the fourth book."

Magic's Pawn (The Last Herald-Mage Series, Book 1)
16.  Magic's Pawn (The Last Herald-Mage Series, Book 1) by Mercedes Lackey
The list author says:
"I don't usually like Ms. Lackey's books, but I do recommend this trilogy. It's short, easy, fast paced, and fun, but it also hits a tender spot in a really good way."

A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 1)
17.  A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 1) by George R. R. Martin
The list author says:
"As you probably know from reading the million and one lists that mention this, these books are superbly written. And they really are, no argument there. Fantastic story and plot. However, I found myself not liking or caring about the characters."

New Spring: The Novel (Wheel of Time)
18.  New Spring: The Novel (Wheel of Time) by Robert Jordan
The list author says:
"I read this and enjoyed it a LOT. But then I looked up the series, and it just goes on and on, with no end, entil eventually someone else had to finish it. Not my cup of tea."

The Complete Ivory (Daw Book Collectors)
19.  The Complete Ivory (Daw Book Collectors) by Doris Egan
The list author says:
"This book's biggest flaw is that I felt there should be  more character developement. It just doesn't have the emotional impact that I love in a book. However, I really enjoyed this. It's fast paced, and you fall right into the story. Reading it makes you feel good."

Pandemonium
20.  Pandemonium by Daryl Gregory
The list author says:
"I actually liked this book a lot. It flowed right along, was very entertaining, and had more to it than I first expected. I didn't love the ending, though, so I can't recommend it as the best book ever, but it is worth a read."

The Devil's Alphabet
21.  The Devil's Alphabet by Daryl Gregory
The list author says:
"This is almost a great book- the writing is excellent, draws you in immediately, the story is solid and novel, and the sci-fi aspects are dealt with nicely. But not everything was explained by the end of the book, and I found the main character to be exactly the same as Del from "Pandemonium.""

Poison Study
22.  Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder

Winterbirth (The Godless World)

Dragon Prince (Book 1)
24.  Dragon Prince (Book 1) by Melanie Rawn

The Native Star
25.  The Native Star by M. K. Hobson
The list author says:
"This was almosot really, really good. Something about it, though, seemed to keep it at arm's length, so I have to rate it as decent instead of great. The wild-west/fantasy combination is refreshing, though, for sure."

The Host: A Novel
27.  The Host: A Novel by Stephenie Meyer

The Tooth Fairy
28.  The Tooth Fairy by Graham Joyce

Interview with the Vampire (Vampire Chronicles)
29.  Interview with the Vampire (Vampire Chronicles) by Anne Rice
