Book Description

September 1, 2003 Sadie Walela Mystery
Is murder always a simple transaction? Don't bank on it.

Sadie Walela's life is about to be turned upside down.

One morning Sadie unlocks the door at the Mercury Savings Bank and confronts a robber who's been lying in wait for her and her fellow employees. He flees after stealing money and killing her coworker. When a whirlwind of events leaves Sadie herself under suspicion, she sets out to clear her name.

This banker turned sleuth is suddenly plunged into an unfamiliar world in which people are not always as they appear-not her employer, not the homeless man she's befriended, not the police officer who takes an interest in the case, not the man she falls in love with. And, as she's beginning to imagine, not even herself.

Sadie is a blue-eyed Cherokee living in northeastern Oklahoma, a half-blood who finds she sometimes has to adapt to get by in the white man's world, much as her father's ancestors did. In this story of robbery, murder, love, and intrigue, she faces adversity at each bend in the road, but in the tradition of her people she adapts and moves forward—even if it means having to re-think her relationships and expectations.

Set against the backdrop of small-town Oklahoma and its Native culture, Deception on All Accounts draws readers into the real lives of contemporary American Indians as it shines a light on violence, corporate corruption, and prejudice in modern America. As Sadie Walela comes to terms with murder, romance, and her hopes for a career, she finds deception on all accounts.

From Booklist

It's a pleasure to make the acquaintance of Sadie Walela, a banker in northeastern Oklahoma who is thrust into the role of amateur sleuth after a spate of branch robberies leaves several colleagues dead and her career in critical condition. Sadie, who was much closer to her Cherokee father, uncle, and grandmother than she was to her white mother, lives on her dad's old spread with a gentle horse and a ferociously protective wolf-dog. No passive victim, Sadie displays admirable toughness as she copes with racist supervisors, rabid FBI agents, and an abusive ex-husband. The story's most satisfying aspect is how Sadie's essential decency keeps leading her toward the solution. Instead of developing a full set of investigative skills on the fly, she gets at the answers by helping a homeless man, befriending children, and leaving herself open to the possibility of love. Although the plot could use more thickening and the bad guy isn't hard to spot, Hoklotubbe paints a believable picture of Indian-white relations in small-town America and crafts a series protagonist as savvy as she is sweet. Review

"In her debut mystery, Sara Sue Hoklotubbe has come up with a unique protagonist in an unusual job for an amateur sleuth. She makes good use of her own Cherokee heritage to enhance the mystery while not overwhelming the reader with too much history. Deception on All Accounts is a well plotted story with excellent characters and pacing, making for a very enjoyable read. An auspicious debut." —Sally Powers, I Love a Mystery Newsletter "One of the best mysteries I have read in a long time . . . The plotting is rich, the main characters interesting and mostly sympathetic, the story gripping, the writing straightforward. . . . This is Ms. Hoklotubbe's first novel and I hope it isn't her last. I highly recommend Deception on All Accounts." —Diana Vickery, Mystery News "It's a pleasure to make the acquaintance of Sadie Walela, a banker in northeastern Oklahoma who is thrust into the role of amateur sleuth after a spate of branch robberies leaves several colleagues dead and her career in critical condition. . . . Hoklotubbe paints a believable picture of Indian-white relations in small-town America and crafts a series protagonist as savvy as she is sweet." —Booklist "Evenly paced prose, increasingly suspenseful plotting, and the emergence of a strong heroine characterize this promising first mystery." —Library Journal "A rich and multi-layered suspense thriller . . . Sadie Walela is a protagonist that we will want to revisit again and again even after we uncover the truth beyond the deception. 'Deception on All Accounts' is a tangled web of intrigue that will grip you from start to finish." —Indian Country Today "A good page-turning first novel . . . You care about the main characters and want to follow their stories." —Nigel Tappin, Mystery Review "Draws readers into Cherokee life and Native American culture, offering insight into a world unfamiliar to most readers." —Muskogee Daily

5.0 out of 5 stars A Clever Mystery, November 20, 2003
By

This review is from: Deception on All Accounts (Sadie Walela Mystery) (Paperback)
You will get a delightful and true picture of Northeast Oklahoma, and a wonderful journey of twists and turns in the interesting life of a Cherokee banker who like many Indian women is the target of racial slurs and sterotypical anti-'business women' treatment. She is fearless; and you will be rooting for her and crying at the tragic loss of some of her co workers. The best part is you will not guess the identity of the protagonist not until the author spells it out to you! I couldn't stop turning the pages, and throughly enjoyed the flavor of Sadie's Cherokee family and perspective of the world. Sadie throws racism, sexism, and stupidity out of her very interesting life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Great Oklahoma Mystery!!!, December 13, 2003
By
Craig T. Case (Oklahoma City, Oklahoma United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Deception on All Accounts (Sadie Walela Mystery) (Paperback)
Sara Sue Hoklotubbe's 21 years in the banking industry serves her well in this well developed mystery. Sadie Walela's life is turned upside down when she arrives at her place of employment at the Mercury Savings Bank and encounters a robber. After fleeing with the cash and leaving one of Sadie's co-workers dead, the robber begins a spree of robberies which results in Sadie herself being considered as an accomplice. Even worse is that Happy, a homeless man that she has befriended, is taken into custody as the prime suspect.

Not only is this a fast paced mystery, but Ms Hoklotubbe gives us a very clever criminal who has a knack for finding weaknesses in the small banks' security systems. The action starts on page one and doesn't let up.

The author Sara Hoklotubbe certainly knows banking and her book kept my interest from start to finish. Sadie Walela was a very intriguing character and her Indian heritage made her even more interesting to me. I understand another book in this series is to be released soon, and I look forward to more adventures from Sadie. For the mystery lover, this book is a must read, I read it all in one day!
