Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

The Deception is the third in the Daughters of Mannerling series, but don't fear you won't be able to follow the compelling foibles of the six Beverley sisters. Like all Marion Chesney Regencies you can jump right in! Mannerling is the former home of the Beverleys, and it possesses a strange and malevolent spirit. In the first book, the father of the Beverley girls literally kills himself attempting to keep the house in the family, but the girls still lose their family home. The house possesses its previous owners and somehow makes them believe that nothing is more important than living in Mannerling. Those that have lived there once must return, at any cost. Despite warnings from her older sisters (who both attempted to regain Mannerling, at the cost of their own happiness) Abigail Beverley is the third daughter to try to reclaim Mannerling. She plans to marry the new owner, despite his wretched reputation. Fortunately, Miss Trumble, the infallible governess, and the handsome Lord Burfield teach Abigail the true meaning of love, and she, like her two older sisters, discovers there is more to life than Mannerling. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From the Inside Flap

IT WAS AN UNFAIR DECISION--TO BE FORCED TO CHOOSE BETWEEN HER HOME AND HER HEART. . . .

When one of her sisters is attacked by Harry Devers, the lecherous son of Mannerling's present owner, Abigail Beverley puts her obsession with reclaiming the mansion on hold. And then Abigail meets the dashing and extremely eligible Lord Burfield, fresh back from the army and in full-time pursuit of a bride.

Yet unexpected circumstances force the insufferable Harry Devers to recuperate from a riding accident in the Beverley home, where Abigail's twin sister Rachel nurses him back to health--and into betrothal. Stirred from its brief slumber, Abigail's fury returns, alive and kicking. So when Rachel begins to have doubts about marrying Harry, Abigail devises a daring plan to win back Mannerling once and for all.

But perhaps Abigail would be better off concentrating on Lord Burfield, lest he be snapped up by Prudence Makepeace! --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Things sure were different in the early 1800s. This book is always interesting and it seems to give a good portrayal of how life was a couple hundred years ago.

5.0 out of 5 stars "The Deception" was a book not to be put down!, February 19, 1999

I am an avid reader of Chesney novels - the only fiction that I do read. She spins such believable tales that I long to be in Regency England! You will not put this, nor any other Chesney novel down.
