Although this book does not really say anything new about the polygraph or about how to "beat" it, the book will nonetheless be useful for those in post-tramautic shock from a polygraph experience. It is patent and utter nonesense to suggest that this machine is 99 percent accurate in detecting "lies". The only thing a polygraph does is detect changes in heartbeat, breathing, etc. As the author points out, there is not a shred of evidence to suggest that reactions such as this are related to a lie--they may be, but are just as likely to indicate stress or a sensitivity to certain questions. Clifton's book is readable and requires no scientific background. Those of you who have had the unfortunate experience of undergoing this "vodoo" science might want to give it a read, just to remind yourself that there is nothing wrong with you--the people who believe in this stuff are the ones who are delusional.

This book explains how the plygraph works (or doesn't work.) Polygraphs only record, however accurate or technically improved, physiological responses. The correspondence of these reactions to any deception is a matter of interpretation. The interpretation is always clouded by presumptions of what is the "real" truth and how the subject "should" be reacting.

This book explains what to do to help get past the artificial interpretations and not be judged as a liar when you are telling the truth. ...

The book is a way to do exactly the opposite of what it purports to achieve for the reader. The only reason I am making a comment such as this is a client of mine read it after I had finished with it, and the promises it makes were in no way delivered.The content contains a lot of facts mixed with statements that have now been proven to be in fact false. Anyone who uses this book to help them beat the test is going to get themselves in a awkward situation as was my clients experience. If you are guilty of a crime do not agree to sit a polygraph test ,get yourself a good lawyer. The liklihood of being detected is as high as 99%.The text is out of date as polygraph testing has improved in recent years making this text obsolete.
