Product Description

The true threat lies within the heart. Kate McAuley once thought Lucas Barone loved her, and returned that love for all she was worth-until the day he walked away without a word. Now, four years later she answers a knock on her door and finds Luke on her doorstep, broken, bleeding and unconscious. He brings with him all kind of emotions, and all kinds of questions. Where has he been? Why did he leave? And what's an accountant doing with wounds like these? As a covert ops specialist with the U.S. government, Luke deceived, betrayed and conned so many people he couldn't keep them straight-except Kate. Their time together was magical, until the call came and he was forced to walk away. For four long years, memories of her have kept him alive and sane. Now, hunted by his own government, desperate and injured, Kate is the only one he can trust. Kate's innocent phone call for help sets in motion an evil that reaches the highest echelons of political power. With accusations of murder and treason hanging over their heads, it'll take every ounce of Luke's training, intelligence-and Kate's trust-to keep them alive. Warning: Deep emotion, edge of your seat suspense

4.0 out of 5 stars Deception, February 1, 2009
Katherine McAuley couldn't believe her eyes when she looked out of the peephole and saw Luke Barone standing in her doorway. One day eighteen months ago, he had just vanished from her life. Now he was asking for her help, and when Kate opened the door to tell him to go away, he fell through unconscious. She had just started to get her life back together, and now Luke was back, but she didn't know if she could survive the heartbreak of his absence when he left her again. Kate knew she should get him out of her house as soon as humanly possible to save her already tortured soul.

Luke Barone was an IATT operative, but even he didn't know what was going on, and needed a place to lay low to find out. He had been attacked when he returned home, and based on his injuries, he knew without a doubt he wasn't supposed to survive. He had missed his Katie the entire time he had been gone, and knew he wasn't fit to be around her, but couldn't think of anywhere else to go. Luke desperately needed to reconnect with the woman that had become the center of his being. He was shocked though to see the changes in Kate. She obviously had been through some type of trauma. Her changes weren't just physical because he could see the haunted and pained look in her eyes. The biggest change he noticed was that she wasn't painting anymore. He wondered why something that was such a large part of her was now missing. Before he could think about it for long, he heard an intruder. Relying on his gut instinct telling him to get out, he grabbed Kate, but was forced to kill the intruder that he had always known as a peer and coworker.

As severely injured as he was, Luke now knew they were against a formidable foe, and he vowed to protect Kate even if the price was his life. He didn't want to ever let her down like he had again. As they went on the run, and the lines between friend and foe blurred, Luke only hoped he could get them out of this mess in tact.

What a great suspenseful read! Well-developed characters with enough chemistry and passion between them to scorch. Kate and Luke are two lonely people struggling with torment too great for each of them to carry alone. It will take each other to heal the wounds.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deception, October 9, 2009
Eighteen months ago, Lukas Barone walked out of Katherine McAuley's life without a word. He just disappeared. Kate never got over Luke, but she managed to move on with her life - until he shows up again telling her he needs her. Less than a day later, after Luke tells Kate about his undercover profession and that some very powerful people are after him, they're on the run. Kate has no choice but to trust the man who broke her heart; her life depends on it.

Deception is exciting from first page to last. I love how it starts and how it ends. In between, there's a lot of suspense and tender emotion. Kate had a very rough time when Luke disappeared. He has to earn her trust back, which isn't too hard since it's staring them in the face and threatening their lives. The angst between Kate and Luke is real and so is the danger in Deception.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not worth the price, October 5, 2009

This book is not worth the price (it was free). It appears to have been written for a high school english class and probably received a B-. Don't take up space on your Kindle with such drivel.

Not bad for a freebie. Good character development. I felt for Kate and Luke as a couple but thought the plot re their arch nemisis could have used a little more work.
