3.0 out of 5 stars Made for Showtime, March 31, 2009
This review is from: Deceptions [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Harry Hamlin met his future wife, Nicolette Sheridan, on this film set. Given their marriage only lasted a short time, he might have been better off not making the movie, because it didn't help his career any more than it did his personal life.
I remember a review of this tele-flick stating that Hamlin's Nick Gentry was the, "sloppiest dressing cop in the history of film." That alone got me to watch and tape the movie. As I suspected, Hamlin's character was actually stylish, in a way perhaps not as respected then as now. He wore an old horsehide motorcycle jacket and well-faded Levi's 501s, along with a series of unbuttoned button-down shirts, usually with a t-shirt underneath. And he drove a ratty old Porsche 911 Targa with a two tone black and white paint job that was the result of body damage and the use of primer. Very cool and very LA, even in the new millenium.
Unfortunately, Hamlin's look was the only part of the movie that was well-done. The plot tries to be noirish, but just isn't intelligent enough to pull it off. Most of the movie just requires too much suspension of disbelief, and some of it is just plain stupid film-making.
For example, in the climactic scene, when Nick gets a phone call indicating his lover and probably his partner are in grave danger, he GOES HOME AND CHANGES HIS CLOTHES before heading off to the rescue. In an earlier scene, his partner heads out to move the endangered female in peril to a safe house, and he, too, changes his clothes on the way. These filmmakers just weren't paying attention, and it shows in every scene.
Still, Harry is interesting in his role, as is Robert Davi as his more intelligent partner. And Sheridan looks good, at least. Those who know her only as one of the Desparate Housewives might not believe what a petite beauty she once was.
So it's worth a watch just to educate yourself on what kind of clothes cool guys wear (I still dress pretty much like Nick Gentry). And ladies, if you see me, go ahead and throw yourselves at me. But try not to ruin my life in the process.

5.0 out of 5 stars Modern-day film noir, December 2, 2001
This review is from: Deceptions [VHS] (VHS Tape)
No, this is not porn. It's a modern day film noir with murder, steamy romance & plot twists & turns. The ending could have been better. But I like this movie enough to buy it.

2.0 out of 5 stars DECEPTIONS IS STUPID, BORING, AND NO FUN!!!, February 17, 2004

This review is from: Deceptions [VHS] (VHS Tape)
"You're stupid, boring, and I'm not having any fun with you!"

--What actress Nicolette Sheridan allegedly said to former husband and DECEPTIONS costar Harry Hamlin when she left him in the early 1990s.

Nicolette Sheridan is an underrated actress, but you wouldn't know it from her role in DECECPTIONS, made in 1990 with her then husband, former LA LAW star Harry Hamlin, and tough guy actor Robert Davi.

DECEPTIONS is a terrible waste of talent, and the best thing about it is the movie photo of sexy Sheridan posed with Hamlin(with Davi in the background), and getting to look at the Sheridan and Hamlin together. NICOLETTE SHERIDAN AND HARRY HAMLIN WERE THE MOST BEAUTIFUL HOLLYWOOD COUPLE EVER, and Hamlin was at the top of his game in 1990, but it's always difficult for couples to do good movies together, and DECEPTIONS is a terrible disappointment.

DECEPTIONS is another of those movies where the audience is supposed to guess whether the wife is guilty or innocent, and of course Hamlin is the cop falls in love with her, and it's all downhill from there.

The sensational good looks of Sheridan and Hamlin probably could have been used to make a terrific movie, but this was the wrong kind, a movie that downplayed their personalities instead of showcasing them.

And so aside from looking at THE MOST BEAUTIFUL HOLLYWOOD COUPLE EVER--NICOLETTE SHERIDAN AND HARRY HAMLIN!!!--DECEPTIONS IS STUPID, BORING, AND NO FUN!!!
