3.0 out of 5 stars Its competition is hardly daunting...
Credit Decibel for handling the mostly-ignored world of "extreme" music with some semblance of professionalism. Credit Decibel for copious and honest CD and live reviews. Credit Decibel for its coverage of new/emerging bands.

Decibel has great potential. It is one of the few music magazines that I read regularly, and one of the few that doesn't make me...

This is my favorite magazine right now. This is the magazine that I always get excited about when it comes in the mail. Decibel is obviously written by people who are big music fans in general, but love extreme metal music. These are the people who can see a lot of music journalists for the wankers they are and that bands like Slayer, Carcass, Jesu, and Converge deserve as much, if not more respect than popular bands like Talking Heads, Nirvana, and Radiohead.

One of the best things about this magazine is how it covers all genres and eras. They'll do a profile of some obscure grindcore or doom metal band or a band that is just doing something entirely new. And they do cover stories on popular older bands like Iron Maiden, but then they'll do a cover story on bands that might not be that popular, but are still some of the best out there, like Pig Destroyer and Pelican. So they try to have something for everyone here. There's some good articles for people who aren't huge metalheads and plenty of stuff here for people that want to dig a little deeper. But what they don't do, at least not for a while now, is do cover stories on popular bands that just kinda suck. Their cover story on Trivium has become a joke among the magazine's readers and writers and doesn't look to be something that will be repeated.

Reviews are usually well written. They're not afraid to give out a couple of 9's to the albums that deserve them each month. These, as well as pretty much everything else in the magazine, are usually written with a lot of humor, but you can still tell these are people who genuinely love this music. Also they review a lot of different stuff. You might see Cannibal Corpse, Jesu, Queens of the Stone Age, and even really inventive heavy hip hop like Dalek in the same issue.

The magazine's most popular feature is probably the Hall of Fame. This is an article in each issue where they induct a classic album into their Hall of Fame by interviewing every band member involved in the making of it. The interviews are usually really informative and often include some funny anecdotes.

Another good article is Call and Response where they send seven mp3s labeled only by song title to a different musician and ask for their opinion on them. This usually leads to musicians just totally trashing other bands, sometimes bands they're friends with. Other times, it shows you just how insanely knowledgeable some of these guys are about these bands.

Anyway, this review is already going on pretty long, but there are so many things I like about this magazine. There's always some interesting articles and it's always turning me onto good music. And it's pretty funny too. Check it out.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Metal Magazine done right., April 23, 2009
This review is from: Decibel (Magazine)
Decibel has made me believe in magazine again. I'm like a 3 year old that just got home from the toy store when my new issue of Decibel comes. I can't wait to read it and see what obscure bands I've never heard about will be in there, and also interested in the cover stories on some of the best in Metal. Along with in-depth interviews, Decibel Hall of Fame, reviews that are of great quality, and what seems to be an unstoppable writing output, I will subscribe to this magazine as long as its around.

4.0 out of 5 stars Decibel Magazine is the sizzle...(Chris Freeman, BoozePig), May 28, 2005
This review is from: Decibel (Magazine)
Ever since we got the first issue of decibel at my work, i've found it to be an informative and entertaining mag that somehow manages to cover a lot of my favorite bands and musical preferences. While I agree with many of their reviews, sometimes i feel as if i've been mislead when i hear what the album actually sounds like (which was the case with the red chord) but it beats revolver, and i see it as the american counterpart to the UK mag terrorizer...so thumbs up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank You, May 21, 2005
This review is from: Decibel (Magazine)
Finally a good metal No no no scratch that a BRILLIANT metal magazine from the US.
Many have tried and have made good attempts but not been consistant.
Decibel has a great overall look glossy pages good pictures (but thankfully not just another picture mag)and good sensible reviews unlike some other mags that just say an album is no good they tell you why it is good or no good.
It features all kinds of metal but seems to keep each issue with something for eveyone and is priced very reasonably.
Thank You Everyone at decibel

Are you tired of poser metal magazines? Decibel is for you. Decibel only covers the REAL metal bands. No wannabe's. No top 40. They cover everything from Grind to Black Metal. The interviews are great and their reviews are always trustworthy. If you are a TRUE metal fan, Decibel is definitely worth checking out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Decibel Magazine=More Metal Than A Steel Mill, April 11, 2005
By
This review is from: Decibel (Magazine)
Decibel Magazine is BY FAR the most in depth and entertaining extreme music magazine I've ever had the pleasure to read. They work beyond the field of other metal magazines to ensure coverage of every realm in the metal world, from christian hardcore to the most blasphemous of death metal, to raging grindcore & insanity inducing tech riffagery, then slowing it down with some crusty stoner metal, and even reliving the old days of thrash. With such artists as The Dillinger Escape Plan, Converge, Mastodon and Morbid Angel gracing Decibel's covers, you should know right off the bat that these guys know exactly what they're doing when it comes to quality extreme music. (Oh, and if you're expecting another magazine with 20 full page pictures of hot new Disturbed or Linkin Park poses, you're definitely looking in the wrong place...)

I wouldn't know where to begin with the amazing content this magazine contains. Decibel begins with the usual news, release dates, and reader mail, but starts to get more interesting with a Q&A section featuring Carcass vocalist/bassist Jeff Walker. Next, an 'UPFRONT' section which reviews concerts, studio updates and lays out up and coming band profiles. A dozen or so pages later begins the comprehensive interviews and articles, which blow other 'metal' music magazines clear out of the water. Not to mention a Call & Response section in which a member of a well noted extreme band reviews songs from music reaching far beyond the metal world. What some of these fellas have to say about music today is, at most times, quite hilarious. Then there's the Decibel Hall Of Fame, in which they revisit and thoroughly disect metal classics that define what makes the music so great today. Then comes the reviews. Dozens and dozens of pages make up the extensive review section. You know that band you've been hearing about that you really want to check out, but are not too sure of all the hype? Yeah, it's most likely reviewed in there. The magazine ends with the best contests a magazine has to offer, with prizes ranging from huge Autographed CD/Tshirt/Hoodie/Sticker/Vinyl packages to single CD's or T-shirts. The last page ends with some off the wall rant or analogy or timeline concerning what this magazine's all about. THE METAL

That's all there is to it. Extreme Music. Every bit of it. Pure and simple. Now raise the horns, knock back a cold one and order this magazine!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great new magazine!, June 7, 2005
This review is from: Decibel (Magazine)
I've been looking for a good music magazine for a long time and i've finally found it! Decibel features awesome bands on a monthly basis. Just been warned you won't find any Velvet revolver or slipknot in its contents, and that's a good thing! Decibel writes about bands worth finding more about and who aren't just the flavour of the week. It has good articles and it's also very well put together and visually pleasing. I eagerly await getting the new issues every month. If you're a music lover you need to buy a copy of decibel, because you won't be dissapointed.
