I am a big fan of self-help books, or should I say good self-help books written for intelligent people. This is one of them.

Steve jumps straight in the topic by dissecting one of the basic underpinnings of life: motivation. He puts it in very simple terms and develops his main theme from there by letting the read think and review for herself: what has been the major source of success in one's life? When he or she simply managed things (including tasks arising from someone else's agenda), or when he or she aimed for something no one else really asked for - those true individual, mind- and life-enriching goals?

The book contains tons of practical advice and examples that are original - a tall order in the current torrent of self-improvement books. Highly recommend this book - pick it up, digest it and make it part of your key library of books that are going to make you better as a person.

5.0 out of 5 stars A game-changer March 5, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is the kind of book that can change the way you think about your life. It's not a typical self help book with time-consuming exercises that you will never do, and endless chapters talking about the problem without offering a realistic way of solving it. Instead, the author lays out his recommendations in the first chapter, and in the following chapters provides an achievable way to make them happen. It grabbed me right away because of its simplicity and sound argument: The author does not recommend dropping daily responsibilities in order to achieve goals. For that reason, it is a game-changer for the busy person who rarely takes the time to stop and think about how his or her life is proceeding, day after day, and year after year. He explains how to fit what h refers to as "gain", or working toward our goals, into our daily lives. We can spend a lifetime just meeting deadlines and avoiding consequences, or we can move toward our goals in spite of a constricting schedule and endless demands on our time. To anyone who has experienced burnout, this may sound impossible, but the author lays out exactly how to make it happen. A very insightful book, and a great way to instigate change in your life.

5.0 out of 5 stars It is in your hands. February 5, 2014

I recommend this book to anyone who feels stressed at any stage of their life. If you like to find ways to be more self aware and lead a self balancing life, this book is for you. I have had the life enhancing event of attending an all day leadership training class led by Steve McClatchy. His book captures the essence of that life event. For those of you who find life's lessons everyday, you will appreciate who Steve quotes at the title page of every chapter.. What's not to like about a memorable quote from Fred Rogers, Jerry Steinfield, Bob Hope and... Dumbledore from "Harry Potter".. "Decide" is all about knowing what your choices are, and aligning them to who you are and what you want. Thank you, Steve, for giving us a book to reenforce what you taught in class.

Every once in a great while, you come across a self-help book that's a 'shelf-clearer', making your previous collection a bit obsolete. "Decide" is one of those. And this is my first 5 star review on Amazon.

In the clearest possible terms, McClatchy breaks down simple approaches to organizing the flood of demands on your day/week/month/etc., and paints a compelling picture for integrating the goals that we never seem to get to, yet hold the most powerful impact on our personal and professional lives. His approach to prioritization of work turns my conventions upside-down, and resonate with the "Duh! Why didn't this occur to me?" that tells me that this can easily become my new way of looking at life's workload. Understanding our motives to create gain and prevent pain, then ways to organize our actions behind this, is simple and genius.

In terms of good, implementable ideas that will change how you work, this book is a treasure-trove. Any reader will certainly come away with new perspectives and actionable practices that will positively impact you. All packaged in a straightforward, engaging read that just had me pull an all-nighter to finish.

Decide to order and read this book - your subsequent decisions will most certainly be easier and smarter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Goal Setting to Goal Achieving September 7, 2014
I have now seen Steve speak twice and read this book, all in the past 2 years. The reason I love reading and listening to Steve's material is because anyone can apply it to their life immediately. He doesn't give you more work to do, like many other books do. He focuses in on the reason why we make decisions that way we do, why our brain operates the way it does, and what we can do to consciously make better decisions.

For me personally, Decide helped me go from goal-setting to goal-achieving. I have always been diligent about setting goals, but for some reason, I was not following through. In his book, Steve breaks down our "A tasks" by suggesting we list out all of the necessary steps from goal start to finish. Then, instead of trying to do all at once, just put the first action step on the calendar. When you finish that step, schedule the next one.....This approach has helped me tremendously in the past 6 months. Thanks for the great book Steve and I can't wait to read the next one!
