Book Description

A memoir following a marriage into mental illness of a spouse, domestic violence, children, divorce and ending in suicide. Combining the author's writing with journal entries, a story of loss and learning to step into the dance of life again.

After 12 years of marriage and trying so hard to make a failing marriage work, Alycia Neighbours found herself going from the office of a lawyer to the office of a funeral home. With three small children and herself left behind in a whirlwind of events, Alycia talks with a transparency of hurt, forgiveness and grace as she attempts to find a way to live again within the loss.

A powerful, vivid and raw story into the life of a silenced survivor, "Deciding To Dance" is an emotional journey that leads you to a dance floor and encourages those who are suffering to learn to dance again in life.

Reviews:

Rachael Oliver - ""Deciding to Dance" is a real life story that touches home to me. As a suicide survivor in a somewhat similar situation, I can honestly say that Alycia has gone over the top in sharing her story with her readers. This story is real. It's painful. It will have you in tears and it will make you smile. Her creative writing style along with the life (and death) that she has shared in "Deciding to Dance" shows what a courageous and brave wife, mother, and woman she is. This story will touch your heart and possibly change your life!!"

Dana Cope - "Deciding to Dance is an incredible story of strength and healing. The author has a gift of making the reader feel like he or she is living the story. The reader feels all the emotions of the story. I highly recommend reading this book, whether you are going through loss or not. It's a very moving, emotional, and powerful story."

5.0 out of 5 stars I know this story well... September 14, 2012

I knew Dan before I knew Alycia. Or I should say I knew the online persona who Dan wanted the world to see, before I knew Alycia. And he wasn't who he wanted you to think he was. Although this book tells you a lot of Dans demons, and how Alycia had a hard time being his wife, it tells you of healing, and living. I really just want to thank the author for sharing how things really were, and to remind her of her friends new and old, and how we each care a lot for her. Suicide to some is the end-all answer. Alycia is the end-all answer to wanting to live, to love and share in that love. I know of no one on this earth who would drop whatever she is doing to help someone who is hurting. And it shows in her book. Read it, love it, cry through it, and share it. You're a survivor kiddo, your life, your kids and your words prove this out. Thanks for sharing your story, I will tell everyone I know to read it. And may God heap nothing but blessings on your family.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deciding to Dance September 23, 2012

I highly recommend this book. The reader will cry, laugh and scream with the eloquent way the author describes her personal journey. You will root for her and trust that she is a survivor. She captivates you in her way of writing from the first sentence to the end. I personally could feel the anger, hurt, and pain. I could hear the blades of the helicopter, the piano playing and the hit of his hand. This book is a teaching lesson for all women, men, and teenagers to know about relationships, especially what not to do. I hope Alycia will continue dancing! I hope to read more books from her.

More About the Author

There was a lady who lived in a shoe,
and woke up with a pot of coffee or two.

She wrangled her girls into dresses and bows,
she wrestled her boys into shoes and clothes.

After the big kids are ushered to school,
she enjoys painting, yard work and the occasional power tool.

A writer, a dancer, a mom and a wife,
she juggles the craziness known as her life.

As afternoon brings an influx of children,
she must make sure all dietary needs are filled in.

A performer's spirit carried within her,
she can entertain 5 kiddos AND cook dinner.

Feed them some broth feed them some bread,
"Is it too early to put them to bed?"

Homework and coloring, disasters and reptiles,
every insanity met with smiles.

She scrubs up her boys, polishes her girls,
and tries to get a comb through the baby's sweet curls.

A hug and a tuck in and a kiss on the head,
with all of the wee ones snugly in bed.

A few hours to write, or a bath nice and bubbly,
or a moment to watch Lifetime with her hubby.

Going to sleep, as the hippo dog barges in,
ready to wake up and do it again.

Alycia Neighbours currently resides in Tennessee with her husband, 3 daughters, 4 stepsons, 2 Bearded Dragons and 1 dog. The Dragons weren't her idea.
