A warm family drama, heavy on the preachiness., December 5, 2005
This review is from: Deck the Halls (Love Inspired #321) (Mass Market Paperback)
Since Amazon didn't provide an editorial review, this is the book description from the back cover: "Tis The Season" Retrieving the mail from his old apartment brought more than just letters for Vince Cutler. When he opened the door on the lovely Jolie Wheeler and rooms he never recognized, he knew he'd found the person to fix up his bare new bachelor quarters. But behind their banter, he sensed a pain that this friendship couldn't assuage. To be ...Family? The warm embrace of Vince's family reminded Jolie achingly of the nephew taken from her, and the sister and brother she refused to see. Vince's embrace made keeping the distance between them all the more difficult. And all the while the spirit of Christmas was working within Jolie's heart to reconnect her with her family...and with Vince during this very special season. ********************************************* My review: Jolie was a prickly character struggling with a painful past and recent betrayals. She was difficult to warm up to because of the hostile way she interacted with and reacted to Vince. Before she could learn to trust him and let love back into her life, she needed to confront the issues she was hiding from and resolve her past hurts. This involves a powerful lesson in forgiveness, of her siblings as well as of herself. This theme is what makes the story special, and is one of the reasons I enjoy reading "Love Inspired" books. Vince was the type of guy we all dream of finding: warm, loving, caring, patient, kind, generous, open. His boisterous and large family was equally as endearing. The enveloped Jolie right into the bosom of their life and made her feel very accepted and welcome. This remarkably solid family and wonderful characterizations adds beauty and depth to the story. However, Vince was a bit forceful with his religious and spiritual beliefs. I prefer Christian fiction that is less heavy-handed in delivering its message, and I felt that if I were Jolie, I would have ran away from the strong preachiness and been turned-off to the message instead of allowing it to open my heart.

Sweet Story, July 27, 2011

never really having a home life or family, Jolie can't see herself as normal or anything special; but the minute Vince stepped into her apartment (his old apartment) he realized that there was something VERY special about this woman. He also realized she was carrying around a large amount of hurt and anger. Slowly, the two became friends. Jolie was hard up and needed her car fixed. Since Vince had so kindly given her a coupon for a free tow, she called him when she was in need, and the rest is history!!! Soon, her car was purring like a kitten, she was doing his laundry and decorating her house, AND she was discovering love for the first time! How did ALL this happen? Well, you'll have to read to find out!!! Personally, I didn't think Vince was "pushy" in his religious talk. He was a Christian who cared very much for Jolie who was struggling with her faith. What else COULD he do? I didn't see him pushy at all. He asked her to go to church a few times, offered her spiritual counseling a few times, prayed with her, then let her go. He never tried to shove religion down her throat or insist they discuss religion. I saw Vince as a very patient, loving man with a soft heart...I fell in love with him! I loved all his endaring words "hon," "babe," "sweetheart" That is so sweet! And I also love that (and stop reading if you don't like spoilers) there was no boy looses girl scene. They stayed together through the her book. I get tired of reading all these books where the boy and girl split up and try to live without each other...it gets so tiring after a while and I was glad to see these two didn't run from each other when things got rough. Instead, when Jolie really needed him, she called him and asked him to come to her. And the family! Whoo boy, but that was GREAT!

I love the cover, and I liked the story. I didn't love it, and the characters weren't anything special, but it's definitely my favorite of the series...I haven't been able to really get into the other ones.
