Review

Deck the Halls: Quilts to Celebrate Christmas packs in a collection of Christmas patterns for the home: everything from mantels and tables to doors. Ten projects for decorating or gifts offer pieced and appliqued projects replete with all kinds of interesting motifs, in full color. --Midwest Book Review

If you need a quilting book for Christmas, this is it. Deck the Halls is a series of several projects to celebrate the holiday season. The author, Cheryl Almgren Taylor, does an amazing job of picking fabrics to compliment the homey designs of her quilts. From table runners to wall hangings, these quilts embody the spirit of Christmas. This book is a perfect gift for the quilter in your household, or to have in your own personal crafting library. The quilts made from it will warm your heart for years to come. --Barnes & Noble, Bookseller Picks

Deck the Halls: Quilts to Celebrate Christmas by Cheryl Almgren Taylor is a beautiful volume that includes a variety of festive holiday projects. Besides wall quilts to celebrate the season, there's a door banner to welcome your holiday guests, a mantel runner to decorate your hearth, toppers and runners to make your table extra special, and an elegant quilted stocking for Santa to fill.

Most of the patterns include applique, because as Cheryl puts it, "I love the shapes and the graceful curves you can create, as well as the flexibility the technique provides." Of course you can use your favorite form of applique, but Cheryl gives you full illustrated instructions for the fusible-web machine method, and has even reversed the patterns for you. That's a real convenience. --allaboutapplique.net

About the Author

Cheryl Almgren Taylor learned to sew at the age of 13 but didn't begin quilting until 2000. Soon after creating her first quilt, she began designing her own patterns. Her first pattern series, Storybook Snugglers, debuted in 2007 and was followed by a book of Christmas quilts, Deck the Halls, in 2009, all published by Martingale & Company. Her beautiful work has also appeared in publications such as Quick Quilts and McCall's Quilting.

Cheryl's favorite quilting technique is fusible-web applique with a machine blanket-stitched finish. She loves the ease of construction that this technique allows and the design possibilities available with applique. In addition to designing, quilting, and teaching in various parts of the United States, Cheryl enjoys a career in public education and is also a pastor's wife.

This is a beautiful volume that includes a variety of festive holiday projects. Very comprehensive, the book includes a whole section of basic information about fabrics, threads, sewing machines, needles, tools, etc. That's before you even get to the Quiltmaking Basics: rotary cutting, fusible web appliqué, pre-assembly, bias vines, and even paper piecing!

The ten projects in this book are charming and timeless; displaying traditional Christmas colors and themes. I purchased this book solely for the 'Welcome Christmas Door Banner', shown in the Look Inside feature. Upon receipt of the book, the banner was everything I anticipated it would be. I hope I've given myself enough time to create it before Christmas 2014 rolls around! I guess I'll see. My project list seems to grow each day. So many beautiful quilts to make, so little time!

Other projects include two runners and a topper for the festive table, a warm and welcoming mantel runner, four wall hangings ranging in sizes of, 37.5-inches square, 47.5-inches square, 33.5x41-inches, and 37.5x39-inches, a stocking to complete the look of the mantel, and the door banner, which measures 17.5x42.5-inches. Two of the quilts especially catch my eye, 'Pomegranates and Posies' along with 'Christmas Kisses,' which features sprigs of mistletoe.

The author, Cheryl Almgren Taylor, includes directions, at the front of the book, for: Selection of fabric and thread; piecing methods; tips about the sewing machine and needles; rotary cutting; types of fusible web; caring for your iron when using fusible web; using a Teflon pressing sheet, which enables pre-assembly of applique pieces and prevents the web adhesive from melting onto your iron, (a couple available on Amazon, June Tailor Non Stick Pressing Sheet 18x18" and Bear Thread Applique Pressing Sheet). She also gives good coverage of quilt-making basics. Sprinkled throughout are helpful tips.

"Deck the Halls - Quilts to Celebrate Christmas" by Cheryl Almgren Taylor.

You will find a total of four beautiful quilts as part of the many projects included in this book. I can't choose which quilt is my favorite the elegant "Pomegranates and Posies" quilt or the delightful "Christmas Kisses" quilt which features mistletoe. Other projects in the book include table toppers, a mantel cover and stockings. Children will love the "Sweets and Treats Quilt" with its delectable candy and gingerbread men. The book includes instructions for fusible web appliqué and a lot of very useful information for finishing your projects.

I start my Christmas gifts soon.
The minute I saw Cheryl Almgren Taylor's designs I knew this was what I want to work on for friends and family.
The patterns, especially the Ribbons Table Runner is a winner. Different, colorful, and the right size. The Christmas Kisses Quilt is a project to work through the year, and I am looking forward to this.
I have been taking classes and quilting for years and enjoy seeing and trying the new innovations quilt designers inspire.

Deck the Halls has it all. Gee, that rhymed.

Thank you.

Here is a good book to get you started early on this year's Christmas gifts or to give your own house a new look for this Christmas season. From door banners to quilts to table toppers and, of course, the stockings for the mantel for Santa to fill, there is something everyone will want/need.

An extensive 11 page basics section will have you ready to appliqué, piece and assemble you quilted project. There are lots of color photos so you will know what the finished item will look like.

Each project begins with that wonderful color photo and continues with a paragraph about it. Then you will find the finished size and a materials and cutting list. Next are the instructions for making the blocks and, again, lots of graphics to guide your work. Templates are full sized so no running to the copier to enlarge them. Assembly and finishing suggestions wind up the project. I much prefer her "pattern packets" rather than the book form. It is easier to work with the templates on a flat surface that then possibly breaking the binding of the book.

Holly, poinsettias, pinwheels that look like peppermint candy, snow covered villages, Christmas tree ornaments, Christmas gifts wrapped with big bows, Candy Canes, Gingerbread Men (or gals if you give them a skirt!) and Stockings will keep your fingers busy for many hours of quilting fun.
