5.0 out of 5 stars History is written, February 27, 2006
This review is from: The Declaration of Independence With Short Biographies of Its Signers (Little Books of Wisdom) (Hardcover)
Another great book to purchase for those in the History field, Political Science(Government), or just a nut like me that is proud of America and wants to know more. This book and the book on the constitution are great little books to carry and to learn from, great for school aged children and those that have graduated to higher learning. Share knowledge and refresh those facts that one may have forgotten about over the years. A+++++

5.0 out of 5 stars Every American, April 13, 2009
This review is from: The Declaration of Independence With Short Biographies of Its Signers (Little Books of Wisdom) (Hardcover)
I really believe every American should be required to read this stuff. This book, along with many others are part of the core documents of our country's history and founding. Understanding where we have come from, how hard we fought to get here, and what the original documents actually say is important if we want to hold on to it.

These days, most people are getting this information from a pundit or politically interested party. Unfortunately, most of it is incorrect or taken out of its intended context. This is an important book for every home library collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Belongs in every household, February 10, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Declaration of Independence With Short Biographies of Its Signers (Little Books of Wisdom) (Hardcover)
There are other versions of this document available, some include the Constitution, Declaration of Independence and Articles of Confederation. I already had a copy of the Constitution and wanted to have a copy of the Declaration of Independence. This is the document, with brief biographies of the signers. There is no analysis of the document, just the document. I can consult other sources for the analysis, I prefer to have the document to draw my own conclusions without them being colored by someone else's interpretation.

Every household in the United States should have a copy f this document available; particularly if there are children.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Gift for Any American or Would-Be American II, March 13, 2010

America's founding document is justly famed the world over, and every American or would-be American owes it to himself or herself to reread it occasionally. Of course there are almost as many different books containing the Declaration of Independence available as there are Americans to buy them for, but this Applewood Books version is a good choice for reasons besides being sturdy, nice looking, and inexpensive.

It includes engravings and (greatly condensed?) biographical sketches of the signers from Benson John Lossing's century and a half old "Biographical Sketches of the Signers of the Declaraton of American Independence: The Declaration Historically Considered". These biographical sketches aren't quite as moving or detailed as those contained in "The Americans Who Risked Everything", an oft-requested address written by Rush Limbaugh, Jr., father of the famous talk show host, but they still give you some idea of what these signers were willing to suffer for the sake of their country.

A uniform edition of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is also available from Applewood Books for comparison and contrast.

Note: Applewood Books has produced a nice looking inexpensive series of sturdy pocket-sized reprints of important American books, documents, speeches, pamphlets, and poems, the Little Books of Wisdom, uniform with this volume, that are ideal for gifting to doctors, lawyers, teachers, business professionals, and students of same: The Way to Wealth, George Washington's Rules of Civility & Decent Behavior in Company and Conversation, The Constitution of the United States of America, On the Art of Teaching, The Poems of Abraham Lincoln, The Strenuous Life, The Bill of Rights with Writings That Formed Its Foundation, The Path of the Law, The Constitution of the Confederate States of America, The Jefferson Bible: The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth, A Message to Garcia, A Declaration of Sentiments, Robert's Rules of Order, Good Citizenship, On Being Human, A Discourse Upon the Duties of a Physician, Teamwork, Stick-To-Itiveness, Opportunity, & You, The Wants of Man, George Washington's Farewell Address, The Speech of Chief Seattle, Common Sense, The Articles of Confederation, The Emancipation Proclamation, and The Gospel of Wealth.

Some selected volumes are also available in boxed sets: Books of American Wisdom Boxed Set, CEO's Gift Box of Wisdom, Doctor's Gift Box of Wisdom, Lawyer's Gift Box of Wisdom, New Citizen's Gift Box of Wisdom, and Teacher's Gift Box of Wisdom.

And some have been published in Spanish: Un Mensaje a Garcia and Constitucion de Los Estados Unidos.

5.0 out of 5 stars We hold these truths to be self evident . . ., August 10, 2009
This review is from: The Declaration of Independence With Short Biographies of Its Signers (Little Books of Wisdom) (Hardcover)
I have collected the Little Books of Wisdom, including George Washington's Rules of Civility, and the U.S. Constitution. The Declaration of Independence is the document that started it all.

This book is hardcover, as it should be. The document is in its original form, with no explanation of the wording. This is meant as a reference book, but not to study the Declaration with.

I liked it because it is small, and there were facts about the Declaration in there I never knew. For instance . . . Only one man signed the Declaration on July Fourth, the others were later.

I also liked this book because it was the original document. If you want a replica of the Declaration in the one-page format, this is not for you. This document is typed in an easy-to-read, or easier than the calligraphy of the Revolutionaries, and is protected by a hard cover.

5.0 out of 5 stars Indepenence from Great Britain, November 14, 2007
This review is from: The Declaration of Independence With Short Biographies of Its Signers (Little Books of Wisdom) (Hardcover)
This book is the closure of the Revolutionary war, a true miracle. America declared its independance from Great Britan in like 1776 after getting the charter from King James to sail to the new world discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1492. They settled Jamestown and Plymouth by this time, and after the war was over they had most of what still is New England. With the odds stacked against them against an onslaught of British Troops, the British finally gave up and let them have it, viewing America as a third world country.
