Great way to start children's interest,

I actually had many books from the original printing of the Cornerstone of Freedom series and enjoyed it. I have found some used here and there and picked them up for my children who find them interesting enough to ask for more. As a preprofessional teacher I have used them for different units and plan to share a set with my husband who is also a new teacher.

Cornerstones of Freedom are a great series. I know they are geared towards young people however, I really enjoy reading them as an adult.

I recommend, instead, Pauline Maier's _American Scripture_. There you will learn that *the* Declaration in the National Archives is not the original. The original that was sent to the printer was lost. Also, there were *many* declarations of independence, including one that was almost identical to the one passed by the Continental Congress but claimed to antedate it. Also, independence was approved July 2nd and it was this day that John Adams initally expected would be celebrated as the nation's birthday. AND the Declaration itself was almost an afterthought at the time - only two people signed it on the 4th. It wasn't until July 8th that it was publicly proclaimed and read from the steps of Independence Hall.
