5.0 out of 5 stars Yeah I know 5 stars, but I really think they deserve it., August 7, 2006
This review is from: Declare a New State (Audio CD)
The Submarines has managed to create a very beautiful and worthwile album. I stumbled upon them while looking for artists similar to Death Cab for Cutie, (I think). Apparently in the beginning stages of the album the two are separted because each song alternates between them. But towards the end of the album must've have been around the time they got back together (you can kind of tell through the lyrics) "the Good Night", "Darkest things". The album in itself seems to be an account of their relationship during the bad times and memories of the good. I'm a big fan of mellow and lyrically upbeat music, and that seems to be one of the aspects of indie music. If you're a fan of Death Cab, the Pale/Pacific, (I know that Death Cab is completely different from the Pale Pacific, but they're both really good) Dntel etc. then you're going to love this cd, if not, then there's something wrong with you (j/k), but seriously there's something wrong with you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Run, don't walk, to get your hands on this release!, July 20, 2006
This review is from: Declare a New State (Audio CD)
This album, released in the latter 1/2 of this year 2006, is destined to be one of my favorites of the year. The band, made up of husband and wife duo Jack Drag and Blake Hazard, are proprietors of very catchy hooks and melodies. Though but a duo, their sounds fill up a room, and make even hard-hearted Indie music snobs cry in their beer with their sweet lyrical tales of broken relationships and reconciliation. It's easy to find oneself listening to this on repeat.

I was fortunate to catch this duo as a support act to Nouvelle Vague in 2006 at Webster Hall, New York. I arrived early to see Nouvelle Vague and discovered there was a support act; I was expecting to have to wait patiently though a whole lotta noise by a bunch of unknowns called The Submarines. Boy what a pleasant surprise, If my memory serves me well they opened with the song Peace and Hate and continued the set with songs from Declare A New State! A magic performance. This CD has since become one of my favorites with it's lovely melodies and blending of vocal harmonies creating a fresh and atmospheric sound that oddly seems to match the autumnal artwork on the cover. Do not let this pass you by.

5.0 out of 5 stars Something new for my collection!, January 3, 2007
This review is from: Declare a New State (Audio CD)
Love it! Thanks to the FX show Nip/Tuck I have found a new group worth listening to over and over again. In the last scene of the 4th season finale, the entire cast is singing along to the song "Brighter Discontent" and it just gave me goose bumps hearing it. Thankfully I had the show recorded on DVR so I was able to listen to the song multiple times. And after performing a Google search, I was able to track down the artist, and now I'm buying the CD after hearing the other clips on Amazon. What would we do without today's technology? Yeehaw!

4.0 out of 5 stars Completely solid CD, April 26, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

I bought this on the strength of a review on an indie pub, and wasn't that impressed at first. "Brighter Discontent" has a nice chorus hook, but beyond that I thought it was pretty plain stuff. But sometimes of course you need to let music grow on you, and many moons later I can't help notice that not only do I click on this playlist regularly, like weekly, the entire CD is still there, I haven't deleted anything that annoyed me. That's pretty remarkable in itself, damn few CD's live whole on my playlists. I realize there's a story here, and probably that would be more apparent if I didn't have the songs sorted by title, but that doesn't matter much to me. The point is that I like this music a lot, obviously, my Trackman is a ruthless arbiter. The only flaw? It's 10-20 minutes too short.

A husband and wife duo singing about love and life. It is cutesy pop rock that will brighten your day. It is catchy enough to be listened to several times.

Yeah, the story is quirky, but the lyrics and musical simplicity make this record work. I'm sure anyone who by some chance actually hears this disc will be drawn in just like I was
